3 GUIDE TO SELECTING COURSES FOR Topic INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION WHY PROVISIONAL? CORE OR ELECTIVE? YEAR QUARTER HOURS ECTS DEPARTMENT RUSSIAN LANGUAGE CHOOSING COURSES QUESTIONS? Notes HSE St. Petersburg is pleased to announce an offer of 70 English language undergraduate (Bachelors) courses and 49 English language postgraduate (Masters) courses For both Masters and Bachelors courses the range of disciplines includes Economics, Finance and Management; History; Sociology; Politics and Public Administration and Law, among other smaller disciplines. It is anticipated that all of the courses listed will run and indeed they have been offered as options to HSE (home) students for However, it is not impossible that some courses, marked as electives, will not have sufficient students to run and may therefore be postponed. This will not effect more than one or two courses. Courses marked as being 'core' courses are those courses that are part of the compulsory curriculum for HSE students and therefore will definitely run. The electives are chosen by HSE students from among a wider list. There is a small chance that a very few of these won't run. The HSE Bachelors programme is a 4 year programme and so, the higher the year, the more advanced the course content. HSE Masters courses run over 2 years, and you can expect that second year courses will often be more advanced in content than first year courses. The HSE academic year consists of 2 semesters which each disaggregate further into 2 half semesters, yielding 4 'quarters'. Quarter 1 and 2 take place between the start of September and the end of December. Quarters 3 and 4 take place between early January and mid-june. HSE also, rather confusingly, sometimes refers to quarters as 'modules', so if you hear this term, don't be confused - just remember there are 4 of them, 2 in each semester! The hours listed refer to the actual contact hours on the course. The expected study hours are obviously much greater than this but there is no straightforward relationship between contact hours and study hours. For a guide to study expectations, look at the ECTS value. ECTS refers to the European Credit Transfer System unit of credit, now in operation across the European Higher Education Area. The department listed reflects the department that the coordinator of the particular course is based in and therefore reflects the disciplinary backround to the course. A wide range of Russian language courses are available at HSE for exchange and visiting students. They are not listed in these course listings because the details of the level, hours and credits is somewhat dependent on student demand, because all of these courses are taught outside of the main HSE teaching programme. Russian language courses are approximately 4-6 ECTS per semester. In choosing courses, consider carefully the appropriate level of course, the relevance of the course to your home university degree and the ECTS values of the courses as well as the semester and quarter in which they are scheduled to run. Bachelors students may choose year 1 masters courses, but must have a main selection of Bachelors course as well. A full academic year is 60 ECTS, while a semester (2 quarters) is 30 ECTS. If anything is unclear please contact the Head of the Internationalisation Steering Group, Professor Christopher Gerry (cgerry@hse.ru) and Elena Chicherina, Manager of the Center for International Cooperation (echicherina@hse.ru)

8 Other information about our institution Higher School of Economics is one of the top Russian research Universities in the fields of social sciences and economics. It was founded on November 27th, 1992, initially as a master s education center. The Saint Petersburg campus enrolled its first students in In 2008 Higher School of Economics received the status of National Research University which means that one of its strategic goals is to provide an education process which is fully integrated with research activities. Recently, Higher School of Economics has become one of 15 universities in Russia to receive additional governmental funding in the framework of the Implementing Global Competitiveness Program. Specifically, by 2020, HSE should attain a globally recognized standard of research, education and project work and join the ranks of the world's top research universities in three fields: socio-economic sciences (economics, law, management, sociology and political science), humanities and public relations, and mathematics and computer science. HSE St.Petersburg has bachelors and masters programmes in Management, Economics, Political Science, History, Sociology and Law. In 2015 we will open our first Master s programme taught entirely in English: Masters in Applied and Interdisciplinary History. There are also four international research laboratories successfully working as part of HSE in Saint Petersburg: the Laboratory for Comparative Social Research headed by Ronald Inglehart (USA, Michigan University); the Center for Market Studies and Spatial Economics headed by Jacques-Francois Thisse (Université Catholique de Louvain); the Centre for Health Economics, Management and Policy co-directed by Prof Christopher Gerry and Prof Paul Kind, and the Centre for Game Theory and Decision Analysis, headed by Professor Elena Yanovskaya and Professor Herve Moulin. In addition, there are a range of other research laboratories, educational and less formal research groups. 5
