1 Faculty of Economics and Business University of Zagreb POSTGRADUATE (DOCTORAL) PROGRAMMES IN BUSINESS STUDIES AND ECONOMICS
2 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1. Reasons for establishing the studies Doctoral studies represent the highest level of education in the field of economics and business. The doctoral study programme presented here has been designed according to the principles of the Bologna Declaration, following the role models of the universities of Western Europe. The programme is of multidisciplinary nature and is focused on preparing students for high-level research in line with international standards. Trying to achieve excellence, the doctoral programme puts emphasis on methodological and theoretical knowledge as well as scientific developments. The ultimate goal of the programme is to create and develop autonomous research capacities indispensable to students in their further academic or business careers. The study programme encompasses advanced knowledge of economics and business. A multidisciplinary research of theory and its application provided by the programme will help meet the challenges present in all the segments and levels of the contemporary Croatian economy. The doctoral programme is in line with the development strategy of the Republic of Croatia thus contributing towards the development of the knowledge-based society Experience of the proposing institution in administering doctoral programmes and other postgraduate studies The doctoral programme has been designed on the basis of the experience in organising doctoral studies in Economics and Business at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), University of Zagreb, which was started in 2001 before the reorganisation of the studies following the Bologna Declaration, as well as based on the experience gained in the organisation of the pre-bologna second-cycle studies (previously called post-graduate studies).
3 The doctoral programme of the Faculty of Economics and Business-Zagreb has been part of the European Doctoral Programmes Association in Management and Business Administration (EDAMBA) since EDAMBA is a network of doctoral studies of well-known European universities whose basic goal is to enhance the quality of doctoral studies and align the criteria for awarding doctoral degrees all over Europe. Doctoral students can therefore benefit from a number of advantages, such as lectures given by top university professors from Croatia and abroad, EDAMBA summer schools, seminars on research methodologies, visits to European universities, teacher-student cooperation, possibility to choose foreign professors as supervisors for their dissertations etc. The basic features of the doctoral studies are as follows: - full-time engagement (during three years) - integrated studies with two programmes (Economics and Business Studies) - prevalence of research content in the programme and - participation of eminent experts from abroad (visiting professors) covering one part of each course 1.3. Openness of the studies to student mobility and a capacity of the complete programme or some of its parts for integration into a joint study programme with foreign universities Candidates who have completed the graduate study programme and acquired 300 ECTS can enrol on the doctoral programme. Candidates who have received their qualifications (degrees) before the end of the academic year 2009/2010 can also enrol on the programme, which is described in Chapter 2 in Conditions for Enrolment. Students enrolled on the programme can attend courses and take exams for courses taught at other faculties within the same university, other faculties the Faculty of Economics and Business has signed agreements with, as well as at universities members of the EDAMBA. Furthermore, students can continue their studies at the same level in higher education institutions either in Croatia or in partner institutions abroad.
