1 Dokuz Eylül University Graduate School of Social Sciences Department of Economics Program of Financial Economics and Banking Program Description General Description and History The Department of Economics consists of two programs as Economics and Financial Economics and Banking in the Graduate School of Social Sciences at Dokuz Eylül University. As of academic years, Department of Economics is continuing its education and training activities with 7 professors, 6 associate professors, 13 assistant professors and 15 research assistants. Gained Degree The graduates who succeed on the program s conditions get graduate degree within master of science title. Level of Degree Master of Science Conditions for Approving and Enrolling Students are admitted for the graduate program with regard to a written exam and interview. The number of students and the qualification conditions of candidates are noticed in the beginning of semester. The application conditions and the place and date of exam and interview are stated in the notice. It is required that a candidate has a bachelor s diploma and he/she has at least 55 grades in the Exam for Academic Personnel and Graduate Education (ALES) that is centrally carried out by the Centre for Student Selection and Placement (ÖSYM). It is required that bachelor s diploma from abroad is approved by the Council of Higher Education. Candidates state the required information regarding ALES, bachelor s diploma, success grades for each course and graduation grade in undergraduate education until deadline and they apply to the chair of the Graduate School of Social Sciences by getting a candidate number while enrolling by online. Enrolling procedure is organized and carried out by the chair of the Graduate School. Candidates are applied a written exam and then an interview by the committee. Success level of a candidate is calculated as 50% of ALES grade, 25% of undergraduate diploma grade and 25% of the average of the grade in written exam and the grade of interview (on the condition that candidate provides 65 grades at least). Candidates are arranged from the top to the bottom with respect to their success level and the

2 successful ones are noticed according to the number of students that would be admitted to the program. The successful ones, who are citizens of the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus, attend an exam in the Department of Foreign Languages at the university. A student has to get at least 70 out of 100 grades for success in this exam that is carried out in English that is a valid foreign language for the Inter-universities Committee s program. If students get at least 60 grades in the Foreign Language Exam of the Inter-universities Committee s or in an equivalent exam and they have undergraduate degree in a bachelor program within one of the certain foreign languages, they are exempted from the foreign language exam. Conditions for approving and enrolling in the Graduate School are carried out with regard to the Council of Higher Education s GRADUATE EDUCATION and TRAINING REGULATIONS ( Dokuz Eylül University s GRADUATE EDUCATION and TRAINING REGULATIONS ( and the Graduate School of Social Sciences GRADUATE EDUCATION APPLICATION RULES. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning Students are not admitted to the graduate programs through transfer. Conditions and Rules for Sufficiency Student Resource The candidates, who graduated from a faculty of economic and administrative sciences, a faculty of economics, a faculty of business administration, a faculty of political science and the department of economics at the Turkish Army Schools, can apply for the program. The candidates, who graduated from other departments of these faculties, other departments of higher education system and universities that are approved by the Council of Higher Education, can apply for the program on the condition that they accept to get some courses from the undergraduate program in the framework of Academic Preparatory Program if it is seen as required by the department of economics. 3 Conditions All courses of the program of Financial Economics and Banking are elective. Students have to choose at least 5 courses for each semester and provide at least 15 national credits (=30 ECTSs) for one semester. The program also consists of a seminar course, a specialty field course and a dissertation. It is written on diploma that the student graduated from the program of Financial Economics and Banking. Students can choose one course from the program of Economics for each semester. For choosing a continual course in spring semester, student has to choose the related course in fall semester. And some courses require prerequisite course. In the framework of the Graduate School of Social Sciences decisions, it is required that a course will be open if at least 3 students choose it. Student has to get at least 75 out of 100 to succeed. Student can enrol again for the course in that he/she does not succeed, but also he/she can take another course if his/her supervisor approves. Student has to write the conclusions of his/her dissertation with regard to the writing rules of the Graduate School and to defend his/her thesis against a committee. After the defending, the committee decides to approve, reject or be corrected for the dissertation. If it is decided to be corrected, student makes correction and defends again. If the dissertation is not approved again, student will continue his/her education with new thesis supervisor and new subject. It is required to get averagely 3.00 out of 4.00 grades for two-semester graduate program and to complete the dissertation and defend successively for graduating condition in totally six semesters. Profile of the Program In the graduate program, it is aimed that student gets ability to learn, assess and explain scientific knowledge by undertaking research. As regards, it is aimed to provide a theoretical ground and to support this ground within econometric and statistical methods and analyses for applied fields. Key Learning Outcomes 1. To be able to deepen knowledge that gained in the same field or/and different field at the level of expertise by having comprehensive theoretical knowledge in his/her own field. 2. To be able to improve policy recommendations for the economic problems to increase the

4 welfare of society by using comprehensive theoretical and applied knowledge that gained in his/her own field. 3. To be able to work effectively as a team member of a scientific research project. 4. To be able prepare seminar and present it in accordance with the scientific ethics and standards in his/her field. 5. To be able to write theses, reports etc., present and publish them as an article in accordance with the scientific ethics and standards in his/her field. 6. To be able to integrate the theoretical knowledge acquired in the field with the application. 7. To be able to generate new knowledge by integrating the theoretical knowledge that gained in the expertise field, with information that comes from different disciplines. 8. To be able to critically evaluate the knowledge related to the field. 9. To be able to carry out regardless some studies that he/she integrates with knowledge obtained from the field or area of work. Occupational Profiles of Graduates The graduates from the program of financial economics and banking can find a job both in public and private sector. They can attend the inspectors, auditors and assistant specialist exams that are carried out by various ministries, and can work with these titles. National and international companies that belong to the public and private sector are also institutions in that the graduates are employed. In addition, by continuing in doctoral programs, the graduates from the program of financial economics and banking can make an academic career. Transition to the Upper Degree Programs Candidates who are successfully complete master's degree education can apply to PhD programs on the conditions to have academic CGPA rage, ALES grade and foreign language grade that are sought in their own fields or other related areas.
