2 Graduate program has become an essential part of people s lives. It involves solving a wide range of problems relating to power generation, communication, healthcare and the environment. The department s research activities are therefore strongly focused on these societal fields. Smart, innovative electrical components and systems are designed, analyzed and made. As well as working at its own innovative research, the department works closely together with research and development departments in industry. The discipline is constantly changing. As a graduate of the program you will be able to find yourself a position that involves research, discovery, exploring new boundaries and leadership. The nine research groups combine to address the three themes of the department: The Connected World (communication), Care and Cure (healthcare) and Smart and Sustainable Society (solutions for environmental issues). In general, the research program consists of fundamental, application oriented and designoriented projects. Students are actively involved in the research by means of internships and their final project. Within the graduate program, the following programs are available: Master s degree programs Broadband Telecommunication Technology * Care and Cure * * This is a special Master s degree track PDEng programs Information and Communication Technology Healthcare Systems Design* * This is a track within ICT PhD programs Master s degree programs During the Master s degree program in Electrical Engineering you will first follow courses on technical subjects and some courses on management topics (e.g. writing a business plan). In parallel, you will take two internships (of six and ten weeks), possibly abroad. Finally, the graduation project marks the completion of your master s degree program. You will compile the results of your graduation work in a paper. Graduation options In the master s degree program you can choose to do your graduation project in one of nine research groups: Electronic Systems, Mixed-signal Micro Electronics, Electro-Optical Communications, Photonic Integration, Electromagnetics, Electrical Energy Systems, Electromechanics and Power Electronics, Control Systems and Signal Processing Systems. These groups play a key role in prestigious national and international research projects. The research is very challenging and you, as a student researcher, will have to study in detail a new phenomenon, system or application, often in cooperation with leading scientific and industrial partners. The result tends to be a new product, a tool, a scientific journal publication, a presentation at an international conference or a patent. Broadband Telecommunication Technology * The special Master s degree track in Broadband Telecommunication Technologies is broadly based, including compulsory courses in electromagnetism, physics, mathematics, digital network technology and performance analysis. Wireless and optical communication systems and networks and RF electronic and photonic devices also form part of the track. You can choose your elective courses from a list of more than thirty subjects. These include optical fiber communication networks, photonic ICs, wireless transceiver electronics, network operation, computational electromagnetics, adaptive signal processing, ultra-fast optical switching and signal coding. The special Master s degree track also

I m working on communication in enclosed environments. Putting wireless sensors on steelenclosed bearings would be a good innovation, for example for smart cars. The program is really challenging. It s so fast! But so is life. At the same time, professors at TU/e are really open, patient and willing to help you. Studying at TU/e is a dream for me; I get to work with people from all over the world in state of the art lab facilities including a semiconductor foundry. The department has strong ties with the high-tech industry which makes it very easy to find an internship and a job after my study. In my career, I want to balance hands-on work and research: both generating ideas and implementing them. contains courses on professional development and two internships. Your studies are completed by a research project. Graduation options As a Master s student you can work on research projects in one of the following departments: Mathematics and Computer Science Chemical Engineering and Chemistry Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences Care and Cure * The development of complex electrical engineering applications in healthcare, such as MRI scanners, is one of the focuses of the special Care and Cure Master s degree track. But you might also develop a wireless fall detection or an alarm system to help people to live independently at home for longer. Between these two extremes there are countless other applications like hearing aids, pacemakers, monitors for all kinds of biological signals, diagnostic equipment and recovery aids, all of which belong to the dynamic field of Care and Cure. The field integrates knowledge from electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science, physics, biology and physiology. TU/e is in the technological heart of the Netherlands, home to many medical-technological companies, research centers and hospitals. The department has many collaborative links with these companies, centers and hospitals, something that you as a student can benefit from considerably. Your first year starts with two mini-programs, each of which comprises a cluster of four subjects: statistical signal processing, mathematics for electromagnetism, modern physics and optics, and complex analysis. The second mini-program comprises: adaptive array signal processing, adaptive information processing, computational electromagnetics and state-space control. The rest of the year consists of a couple of management courses, elective courses and an internship. The second year contains a 2nd internship (of ten weeks) in the Netherlands or abroad, and the final part of the master s degree program is a graduation project. 4 PDEng programs Information and Communication Technology After you have received your Master s degree, you can continue on to the PDEng program Information and Communication Technology (ICT) within the Electrical Engineering graduate program. The ICT program trains technological designers in specifying, designing, building, testing and evaluating complex multidisciplinary systems. These are systems used in the three important societal research themes of the graduate program Electrical Engineering: The Connected World, Care and Cure and Smart and Sustainable Society. The traineeship During the traineeship (120 ECTS) you follow an individual program, consisting of (a.o.) courses, assessments and (industrial) projects, deepening the theoretical knowledge gained during your Master s studies. You will have the status of a TU/e employee. That means you will receive a salary and have excellent secondary conditions of employment. Your (individual) professional development is an essential topic over two years. You will apply all knowledge gained in large-scale multidisciplinary design projects, preferably in-company. You build up a valuable network in the business community and can count on professional supervision from both the university and industry. Your individual training scheme is customized to your personal and professional skills, as well as the demands of the final project. For Master s graduates, up to 30 ECTS can be exempted in case they successfully have finalized a specified Honors program. Design project The second part of the program consists of a design project, preferably in industry. The project takes fifteen months, and is spread over two years. These are challenging projects with a high reality value that are aimed at the development of your design engineer abilities. In the project, a specific design objective must be reached within a restricted period of time and with limited means. In accordance with the supervising professor you will be given the opportunity to gather specialized knowledge for the design project already in the first year of your traineeship. You will be coached by experienced design engineers from industry and/or by TU/e staff with clear and relevant design experience. You will acquire independence and learn to make choices and work well in a project-based manner. Healthcare Systems Design (track within ICT) After your Master s graduation, you can continue on to the track Healthcare Systems Design of the PDEng program Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Hightech industry needs experienced technological designers able to design complex new products and processes. A Master s degree may well give you the requisite theoretical knowledge but you still lack sufficient practical experience. A PDEng program gives you that practical experience, which boosts your market value for industry. You will have the status of a TU/e employee. That means you will receive a salary and have excellent secondary conditions of employment. You graduate with a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) degree. In the Healthcare Systems Design track the trainees acquire a thorough knowledge of the techniques and processes for prototype design and acquire structural know-how of the healthcare and wellbeing field and related technologies. This is combined with a strong personal and professional development course and training of entrepreneurial and networking skills. 70% of the track consists of in-company design assignments, which are typically done part-time over two years. During the track the trainees build up competences in the areas of prototype design flow, Quality and Reliability, cost awareness, applied physiology, medical ethics and get an overview of medical equipment and processes in hospitals and home-healthcare. They will obtain lectures on technologies for wellbeing applications, regulatory aspects of healthcare prototype development and choose a number of technical and medical electives. A summer school and regular visits to clinics, care-providers and companies will lead to a strong network for the trainees and will prepare them for their future career. The institute represents the three universities of technology in the Netherlands and was established in mid-2006.
5 Leon van Barschot Master & Automotive Technology I was able to contribute to the research of vibration control of flexible rockets I m passionate about control systems and in particular those for automotive applications. Therefore I m currently graduating on the topic of advanced thermal management systems in collaboration with DAF Trucks. I was able to follow an extended, tailor-made set of courses of my interest to combine both and Automotive Technology. Due to this flexibility, you re able to profit by the (inter)national connections of this department and university. Through this, I was able to contribute to the research of vibration control of flexible rockets in a project at Florida Institute of Technology in collaboration with NASA. Needless to say, this was in many ways challenging and enlightening. Another advantage of the programs at is the abstraction of the majority of the courses. The fast-paced evolutions in the domain of electrical engineering urges the need for courses not discussing What s the state-of-the-art? but How did they come up with this new technology?. The staff managed to focus in their courses mostly on the last question, which increases the durability of the gained knowledge. PhD PROGRAMS A Master s degree or PDEng degree entitles you to apply for a PhD position within the Electrical Engineering graduate program. Taking into account the strengths of the department of Electrical Engineering, the activities unfolding in this region and the long term relevant societal problems and market opportunities we have chosen the following three strategic research areas: Care and Cure The Connected World Smart and Sustainable Society Institutes Research institutes unite the forces from industry and science institutions in such a way that the transfer from knowledge to value, the so called valorization of innovation is being stimulated. Below you can find the research institutes in which the department of participates: COBRA ESI NIRICT Intelligent Lighting Institute The three themes have been chosen in such a way that the expertise of the chairs is linked to the societal importance of electrical engineering in the future. They show a broad, coherent, societal side of the research in which the Department of has specialized and increase the visibility of the department.
