1 CENTRAL TEXAS COLLEGE SYLLABUS FOR DIRW 0305 PRINCIPLES OF ACADEMIC LITERACY Semester Hours Credit: 3 INSTRUCTOR: OFFICE HOURS: I. INTRODUCTION Principles of Academic Literacy (DIRW 0305) is a Non-Course-Based-Option (NCBO) course designed specifically to improve the foundational reading and writing skills of students needing intensive intervention based on TSI scores. Emphasis will be placed on strategies to improve instant word recognition, vocabulary development, reading comprehension including rate and fluency, written composition, sentence structure, grammar, and spelling. Targeted intervention strategies will be employed in whole and small groups, as well as individual settings based on academic need. II. LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, Principles of Academic Literacy, students will be able to do the following: A. Vocabulary Development Use decoding skills to correctly pronounce words Use structural analysis for word identification and to determine word meanings Locate words using dictionaries and other reference sources Increase vocabulary through listening activities B. Reading Comprehension Read and answer literal questions Read a variety of different texts Read for different purposes Read and analyze different texts Increase fluency and effectiveness as a reader Increase reading rate as measured by pre- and post-tests Read aloud and silently for increasing periods of time C. Written Composition Write responses to readings and journal entries Use prewriting strategies including graphic organizers Write to reflect, express and develop ideas Use figurative language in individual writing 01/19/16

2 Use appropriate capitalization and punctuation D. Grammar Write simple, compound and complex sentences Write for a variety of purposes and audiences Use all parts of speech appropriate Utilize standard English usage in writing Use appropriate sentence structure Produce effective and grammatically correct sentences Use resources to spell words correctly E. Spelling Use resources to spell words correctly III. REQUIRED INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS/RESOURCES To assist in this course, a variety of materials both in and out of the classroom will be required and used. In addition to regular classroom supplies the following list of supplies are needed for class work: Dictionary Thesaurus Colored Pencils and/or Markers 5 Subject Spiral 3 x 5 Index Cards 3 x 5 Index Card Box 3 x 5 Index Card File Box Guides (A-Z) IV. COURSE REQUIREMENTS A. Prompt and regular attendance is required in the classroom. Student entering the classroom after class begins or leaving before class ends disrupt the educational process. For this reason, instructors may choose to lower a student's grade for an excessive number of tardies or instances of leaving early. A student may be dropped from class for excessive absences. There are no excused or unexcused absences. Students should not have more than four absences in a sixteen week course or more than three absences in a ten week course. Further information regarding the attendance policy is available in the current college catalog. B. Cellular phones and pagers are to be turned off and kept hidden away inside a backpack/handbag while the student is in the classroom. C. Both individual and group activities are done in class. D. Each student is responsible for recording all assignments, including grades which will be kept in the interactive notebook (5 Subject Spiral). DIRW

3 E. All written assignments must be turned in on time to receive credit. F. An interactive student notebook, Portfolio, (5 Subject Notebook) and vocabulary building file box will be kept throughout the class and randomly graded periodically and at the end of the course. G. A student must be present for all examinations and quizzes V. EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS To assist in determining a student's progress in this class, a number of assignments, including projects, quizzes, and tests will be administered throughout the semester. Specific information regarding each of these requirements is available as class handouts. The types of assignments, projects, quizzes and tests that you will have this semester and the policies concerning these examinations and assignments are as follows: A. At the beginning of the course all students will take several diagnostic tests to determine current functioning levels. B. Weekly vocabulary, grammar and spelling quizzes will be administered. C. Four combination unit exams will be administered during the course of the semester. D. Complete ten (10) Activity Center assignments E. Final Vocabulary Project - See class handout. F. Final Writing Composition Project - See class handout G. Final Diagnostic Exam H. Interactive Notebook I. Vocabulary Card File VI. SEMESTER GRADE COMPUTATIONS To receive a passing grade for this course, a student must do the following: A. Earn a final grade average of 70%. The student's final grade will be computed as follows: (1) Weekly Quizzes 10% (2) Unit Exams 20% (3) Activity Center Assignments 20% DIRW

4 (4) Final Vocabulary Project 10% (5) Final Writing Composition Project 10% (6) Interactive Notebook 15% (7) Vocabulary Card File 15% C. Not miss more than four days in a sixteen week course or more than three days in a summer course (excused or not excused). Final grades will follow the grade designation for developmental courses below: "A" - Weighted average of 90% "B" - Weighted average of 80% "C" - Weighted average of 70% "N" - Needs to raise performance to an acceptable level "XN" - Performance unacceptable due to poor attendance or no final examination "W" - Withdrawal from course (initiated by student) End of semester grades: The CTC WebAdvisor (Online) System allows students to obtain their grades online. Instructions for using the WebAdvisor (Online) Registrations and Grades by computer are listed in the schedule bulletin. Grades will not be posted. VII. NOTES AND ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE INSTRUCTOR A. Withdrawal from Course: It is the student's responsibility to officially withdraw from a class if circumstances prevent attendance. Any student who desires to, or must, officially withdraw from a course after the first scheduled class meeting must file an Application for Withdrawal or Application for Refund. The withdrawal form must be signed by the student. An Application for Withdrawal will be accepted at any time prior to Friday of the 12th week of classes during the 16 week fall and spring semesters. The deadline for sessions of other lengths is as follows: 12 week session Friday of the 9th week 10 week session Friday of the 7th week 8 week session Friday of the 6th week 6 week session Friday of the 4th week 5 week session Friday of the 3rd week DIRW

5 The equivalent date (75% of the semester) will be used for sessions of other lengths. The specific last day to withdraw is published each semester in the Schedule Bulletin. Students who officially withdraw will be awarded the grade of "W" provided the student's attendance and academic performance are satisfactory at the time of official withdrawal. Students must file a withdrawal application with the college before they may be considered for withdrawal. A student may not withdraw from a class for which the instructor has previously issued the student a grade of "XN" for non-attendance. Before withdrawing from any developmental course, the student should seek the advice of Guidance and Counseling so that the student does not initiate an action that would inadvertently have negative repercussions on his/her enrollment or Financial Aid. B. Administrative Withdrawal from Course: An administrative withdrawal may be initiated when the student fails to meet college attendance requirements by accumulating more than four (4) absences for a sixteen week course and three (3) for a ten week course. The instructor will assign the appropriate grade on the Administrative Withdrawal Form for submission to the registrar. C. Cellular Phones and Pagers: Cellular phones and pagers must be turned off and put away while the student is in the classroom or laboratory. D. Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA): Disability Support Services provides services to students who have appropriate documentation of a disability. Students requiring accommodations for class are responsible for contacting the Office of Disability Support Services (DSS) located on the central campus. This service is available to all students, regardless of location. Review the website at for further information. Reasonable accommodations will be given in accordance with the federal and state laws through the DSS office. E. Civility: Individuals are expected to be cognizant of what a constructive educational experience is and respectful of those participating in a learning environment. Failure to do so can result in disciplinary action up to and including expulsion. F. Office Hours : Full-time instructors post their office hours outside their office doors. Part-time instructors may be available by appointment. Please feel free to see your instructor should you find yourself having difficulty with this course. DIRW
