General Information Credit 3, Lecture, Lab Prerequisite: Junior Standing Course Overview Computer Systems Technology is a course designed to provide the student with an understanding of the digital world in which we now live. Grasping the basic concepts of information technology, from hardware and software to content creation and management issues will ensure a more successful outcome in the pursuit of any technology oriented career goal. Upon completion the student will have acquired an understanding and grounding in the concepts and applications of today s current digital based society and culture. The experience and knowledge achieved will assist the technology students to be more appreciative, respectful, and comfortable in using computer technology in the pursuit of their professional, as well as personal lives. 3 GIT 335 Syllabus 3 Dolin To understand the concepts and applications of today s current digital based society and culture To be able to apply basic concepts of information technology, from hardware and software to content creation and management issues To develop a working vocabulary of terms used in the information technology Class meets On-Line (MST!): Every Monday at 6:00PM new postings will be made. Postings include the weeks assignments, discussion threads and any assessments. s sent to the Professor after 4:00 PM on Friday will be answered after 9:00 AM on the following Monday. Please note that quizzes will be posted from Thursday at 12:00 PM to Saturday at 5:00 PM, but the Professor, as a rule, will not be available after 4:00 on Fridays. So, if you have a computer that crashes a lot or gives you problems, I suggest making sure you take the quiz by Friday 4:00 in case you need to have access re-set. I would also avoid Friday from 9:00PM midnight as they sometimes take down the Blackboard Server. Course Mechanics This course will begin on August 25 th (Monday) and conclude on November 14 th (Friday) and is 12 weeks long. Each week will include written assignments, related readings and participation in class discussions. The Professor will be available for face to face or phone meetings during normal business hours please call to make an appointment. Virtual office hours will also be available and will be indicated on the schedule or through an announcement. Basic Netiquette: 1) will be checked and responded to Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily. It may take 24 hours to receive a response. During those same hours you can also call Prof. Dolin at Please call if it is urgent and a faster reply is needed. 2) All class postings are expected to be polite and non-threatening. When communicating on a discussion board, all postings should first be written in a word processor (i.e. Word) and spell checked. Cut and paste to post the message and save your document in a folder on your desktop so you can track and verify your participation. Save this folder to the end of the semester as your record of postings and participation. 3) It is the students responsibility to keep their account in working order. THIS IS CRITICAL! Accounts must be kept under quota and any spam filters must allow for the instructors to get through. If you have aliased your ASU address, you must ensure

4 GIT 335 Syllabus 4 Dolin that the mail is forwarded properly. You can administer your preference by going to ASU Interactive and clicking on EPO Update. All s not sent from Blackboard, but on your own personal account, MUST have the prefix 335 in the subject line. 4) It is expected that student will log in on a daily basis to check for any new postings. Participation in on-line discussions is a requirement for satisfactory completion of this course. (See Discussion Board under Module one on Class Portal). 5) If you are having technical difficulty with the class web site please contact myasu-q@asu.edu or visit Estimated Course Evaluation: Assignments Quizzes Final Discussion Board Total pts 175 pts 360 pts 100 pts 80 pts 715 pts Grading Grading will be based on discussion board participation, quizzes, assignments, and a research project. All assignments and projects will be due at the time assigned. Late work will not be accepted (unless prior communication with the Prof. has been made and an extension approved.) If the project is late, you will receive a 0 (zero) for that project. If you have not completed an assignment, turn it in partially completed for partial credit by the due date. You can figure your own grade in the course at any time in the semester by figuring your percentage and using the following scale: A 90% to 100% B 80% to 89% C 70% to 79% D 65% to 69% E 0% to 64% Incompletes: The grade of "Incomplete" is discouraged. It can only be granted before the end of the semester and with approval from the Professor. You must abide by the ASU schedule re: withdrawals and drops. Please refer to the semester bulletin.

5 GIT 335 Syllabus 5 Dolin Attendance (Virtual): You are expected to participate on online, do your own original work, and meet assigned deadlines. At least one SYKPE video phone call should be planned for the semester! There are always issues re: family, work, or other circumstances that may make class participation difficult or impossible. Each of these situations will be evaluated on an individual basis. If you know will be away from a computer more than one week, please be in contact (by & phone) with the instructor as soon as possible. Communication is key here. Assignments: You will have reading assignments, discussion board topics, outside assignments, quizzes, a final exam and a research project. Keep digital copies of all assignments submitted to the instructor for your own records. You are responsible for making sure you have been given credit for your assignments. Deadlines are enforced. The instructor will provide detailed information for each assignment that will explain the requirements. BACK UP YOUR WORK! Online Discussion Board: If you are having issues with this feature, contact IT student support and also let me know via . I expect value added posts each week. Please review the criteria in Module 1 prior to your first post. Downloading files and submitting using the Assignment Feature on Blackboard: Know how these options work by reviewing the help icon at the top of the course screen This is how you will be acquiring and submitting your assignments to the instructor NOT THE DIGITAL DROPBOX. An A indicates above average effort and accomplishment. Just doing the assigned work does not automatically generate an A. Your assignments, test scores, and, on-line participation are VERY important! Participation is expected. If you are having a problem keeping up with the class or mastering the material being taught, please contact me ASAP. We will work together to help you achieve your goal, but DO NOT WAIT until the last week of class. Speak with me as soon as you perceive you are having difficulty. If you are having a problem with a project, speak with me as soon as the problem is evident.

Exams are given on the dates announced - alternate dates are only considered on an individual basis. Please note that myasu servers are unavailable nightly from 2:00AM to 4:30 AM MST and each Friday from 9:00 PM until Saturday at 2:00AM MST. All submission deadlines are based on MST time please take this into account if you are in another time zone. The instructor reserves the right to modify this syllabus at her discretion.
