2 Dear Potential Youth Leader, I M GLAD YOU RE INTERESTED IN WORKING WITH OUR STUDENT MINISTRY! Our church is always looking for volunteer leaders to serve on our team in the student ministry. We believe that solid ministry is built on relationships between adult staff and students. Relationships are key to students feeling loved and understanding God s love in practical ways. This is when real spiritual growth takes place in a student s life. The quality of our staff is very important. We are looking for men and women who have a commitment to Christ and a desire to care for students. With the aid of prayer and consideration, read the enclosed material. I encourage you to observe our midweek youth service before making a decision. Then fill out the application. Because we place great value on this ministry, we place great value on our staff. Once I have received your application, I will call you to schedule an appointment. All information will be kept strictly confidential. In the meantime, please feel free to observe our midweek service. Youth Ministry is a great way to invest your time and serve the Lord! 3 WHAT STUDENTS NEED FROM CARING ADULTS Changing the youth world happens one student at a time. Students do not connect to programs; they connect to people. The most effective way to influence students is through significant relationships with key people in their lives. Our goal is to develop leaders who minister to students. Students need adults who will love God and live for Him Be interested in their lives Take initiative to spend time with them Pray for them Be real Say encouraging words Believe in them Laugh Go to their world Remember their names and care for them Share God s love through personal experience Be consistent to their youth meetings Be patient Enjoy life HOW TO BE INVOLVED IN STUDENTS LIVES We will later explain the application process, but first it is important for you to understand what commitment we ask from our staff. For effective ministry with students, you need to: 1. Understand the Purpose and Planned Values of our Ministry. Take a look at the values and goals that make our youth ministry effective in reaching and caring for students. 2. Commit to a Youth Meeting. Consider the role for which God has S.H.A.P.E.D* you in order to build relationships with students. 3. Grow as a Minister. Develop your personal ministry, which will ultimately influence students. *See S.H.A.P.E. Section 2

4 UNDERSTAND THE PURPOSE AND PLANNED VALUES OF OUR MINISTRY Purpose Statement Our student ministry exists to REACH non-believing students, to CONNECT them with other Christians, to help them GROW in their faith, and to challenge the growing to DISCOVER their ministry and HONOR God with their life. Planned Values Planned values are descriptive words that reflect our values, attitudes, styles, and beliefs that influence our purpose. We try to incorporate these key elements into our ministries and our lives. It is all built on RELATIONSHIPS. Relational approach Encouragement Laughter and celebration Acceptance Transparency Involvement of students Outreach oriented Numerical growth Spiritual growth Home-like Intimacy Professionalism Strategic follow-up R.E.L.A.T.I.O.N.S.H.I.P.S. Ways to Serve in the Student Ministry: Prayer Team If you have a heart for prayer, join others who pray during our youth services, for prayer requests or during events, camps and mission trips. Materials Team Do you have a van to drive youth to an event? A pool to host a summer pool party? A cabin for the Youth Pastor and his family to get away? Haha, just joking on that last one. Be a blessing to our youth as God has blessed you. Hands-On Team Be part of our Student Ministry as you teach or lead small group discussions. We can use you. Look on the next page for areas to serve. 3

5 Commit to a Youth Meeting Ministry Option: Midweek Youth Service Wednesday, 6:30pm (Future start time - 6:15pm) This is our large group meeting that is designed to have a friendly, fun, challenging, and exciting atmosphere. This ministry shatters the church is boring: stereotype and helps students celebrate life. It is filled with laughter, antics, videos, singing, dramas, and a message that moves students toward spiritual maturity. Volunteer Role: Table Leader/Assistant We need adults to greet, learn names, talk to students at tables, encouraging students to attend other youth meetings, and help create an accepting atmosphere. Ministry Option: Weekend Youth Bible Study Saturday, 6:30pm; Sunday, 9am & 11am This is where our Middle and High School students dig into God s word and learn how to apply it s truths in their lives. Volunteer Role: Y.B.S. Teacher/Assistant Teachers develop relationships with students by sharing life through prayer, indepth Bible Study, and weekly accountability. Ministry Option: Youth Electives (Ministry Teams/Elective Studies) Sunday, 5:30pm Ministry teams are filled with students who are involved in an area of ministry based on their desires, gifts, and/or S.H.A.P.E.* We d love to have all students committed to having a ministry where they serve God. Examples of these teams include drama, worship, greeting, mission trips, organizing special events, video, computers the options are limitless and the ministry experience is invaluable. We also offer Middle and High School Bible Studies with a focus on real-life issues such as finances, dating, and specific books of the Bible for those who do not want to be on a specific ministry team. Volunteer Roles: Ministry Team Coordinator/Overseer & Elective Teacher Oversee the organizing and implantation of one of the several ministries. Most teams are started by students but function best when an adult leader walks alongside for coaching, strategy, and encouragement. There are many other opportunities to get involved in our ministry. *See S.H.A.P.E. Section 4

6 The three listed above are the best places to start. If you have a specific gift and desire, I would love to talk with you about how you might express it in the context of our youth ministry. The Elective Teacher is responsible for teaching the lessons in a practical, reallife manner with God s Word always being the standard for each lesson. Ministry Option: Small Group Study Sunday, 6:30pm (Future start time 7:30pm) This is a small, intimate setting in homes where prayer and worship is center. Refreshments are usually served as well. Volunteer Role: Leader and Assistant Leaders Oversee the spiritual direction of each study with emphasis on honest prayer and intimate worship. Responsible for home location, refreshments, and evenings plan. Volunteer Coordinator Roles: Youth Discipleship Coordinator Oversee our H.A.B.I.T.S. Student Discipleship Ministry by producing printed materials, promoting H.A.B.I.T. Sign-ups, encouraging students to continue on their journey of spiritual maturity. Follow-Up Coordinator Oversee our follow-up process from first-time student visitor to distribution of fact card to youth pastors and youth leaders for contact through phone, , or post card mailings. Administer Assistant Help update student website, handle promotional mailings, and update student information database. Work closely with the Follow-Up Coordinator in facilitating student information. Fellowship Coordinator Oversee purchase and set-up of large group refreshments and food items. 5

7 WHAT AM I COMMITING TO? Consistent attendance at a youth meeting. (We ask that you arrive at least 15 minutes early and stay at least 15 minutes late. These extra minutes become key relational times with students) Relational ministry with students during the week. (one-half hour additional time commitment for follow-up with students through notes, phone calls, s, meetings, etc.) Attendance, when available, to youth ministry activities and functions. Attendance at the monthly Youth Leader s Luncheon. Growing as a minister. Our Goal is to help volunteer leaders move from youth meeting-directed ministry (dependant on the youth program) to self-directed ministry (independent ministry). A few keys to help you develop as a minister are: Time: Be patient; feeling comfortable and connecting with students takes time. Participation: Going on special events and camps will help intensify and solidify your relationships with students. Initiative: The more you invest, the more you will get out of it. Your relationships will grow deeper as you invest your time. HOW TO BECOME A YOUTH MINISTRY VOLUNTEER: THE APPLICATION PROCESS 1. Express Interest You may have an interest in serving God by loving students but are unsure as to where you can help. We will help you with this. Some of the most unlikely people make the greatest youth workers, so take the next step as you prayfully consider this ministry. 2. Initial Contact by Student Ministry Staff This is an opportunity for us to briefly connect and hear your desire to be involved in ministry. We will also give you a general overview of the ministry and arrange for you to visit and observe our youth meetings. 3. Receive Youth Ministry Material This packet gives you the basic information that will help you make decisions about our ministry. We have tried to explain as much as we can, but the clear picture happens when you observe a youth meeting. 6

8 4. Observe a Youth Meeting Before you fill out the application, we encourage you to observe a youth meeting. This is a good opportunity to get a better feel for the ministry without having expectations or responsibilities placed on you. You will have a change to meet students, other staff, and write questions for our future meeting. It will be natural for you to feel comfortable while observing a youth meeting (students won t typically go out of their way to make you feel welcome until you get to know them). 5. Complete Application Packet this application packet was developed to obtain appropriate information for our screening process. We request two references. You can choose a (1) pastor, (2) close friend, and/or (3) and employer within the past year. 6. Interview with Student Life Pastor this is an opportunity for you to share thoughts for our observations, describe your spiritual journey, and communicate your gifts and desires for working in student ministry. We will discuss a more specific job description that fits your S.H.A.P.E.* 7. Prayfully Consider your Commitment We want you to take time to pray and think through this commitment. We also encourage you to seek the counsel of family and/or friends regarding your commitment. 8. Return the Signed Commitment Sheet After you have decided you want to make a commitment, sign the commitment sheet and return it to us. 9. Begin Ministry We will discuss the beginning date when you turn in the commitment sheet. This date may vary depending on your intended involvement. 10. Evaluation Meeting At your one-month mark, we will meet to evaluate your feelings and perceptions regarding your involvement. We will continue to evaluate throughout the year and adjust your role to better fit your style, personality, and strengths.
