3 Preparation for a K-12 Library Media Endorsement Washington s K-12 Library Media Endorsement (WEST-E required) Alaska s Type C Special Services Endorsement for School Librarian Accepted as an approved program for a K-12 Library Media Endorsement in states across the country

4 Developed under the auspices of the nationally ranked UW Information School Based on guidelines set by: o American Association of School Librarians (AASL) o Washington Library Media Association (WLMA) o Alaska Association of School Librarians (AASL) Has prepared teachers from across the U.S. and overseas to be certified teacher-librarians

5 SLM Participants Develop skills in working with students and their information needs

6 SLM Participants Learn strategies to integrate instructional technologies, facilitate professional development, and collaborate with classroom teachers

7 SLM Participants Develop leadership to manage a library media center as an information clearinghouse and school-wide academic support system

8 SLM Program Design Eight courses totaling 24 graduate-level credits earned over 5 quarters Two courses on the UW Seattle campus for two weeks each summer Four courses online over the school year Mentored practicum

16 Program Expenses Total program fee $11,520 (fees are paid quarterly and by the course) * One time program application fee of $50* Quarterly registration fee of $45 (effective autumn 2015)* Textbooks and other materials are extra. *All fees subject to change

18 Professional Value SLM instructors are experienced practitioners and leaders in the field

19 Professional Value SLM has been successfully preparing teacher-librarians since 1997

20 Professional Value SLM students can apply up to 18 credits towards the UW Information School s Masters in Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree.

23 Advisory Board Advisory Board includes Harry Bruce, Dean of the Information School, Mike Eisenberg, Dean Emeritus of the Information School, and faculty from the Information School as well as state and local leaders in the field. Advisory Board oversees the program and ensures it meets the standards of the University of Washington, the UW Information School, the UW School of Education, and NCATE.
