2 Developing cooperation between the European Union and neighbouring countries The AlterEurope Master s Degree programme trains experts on the European Union and neighbouring countries, with a firm knowledge of the social sciences, economics and law, and capable of participating in political and economic decision-making in the public, private and NGO sectors. The programme is founded upon the concept of Altérité or otherness : otherness or diversity in relations between the European Union and neighbouring states, and in the programme s interdisciplinary approach, an asset for future degree-holders. The AlterEurope Master s Degree is offered by Université Jean Monnet Saint Etienne, ENS de Lyon and Sciences Po Lyon, members of Université de Lyon.

3 The rising power of the European Union s neighbouring regions Anticipating Europe s future development, the AlterEurope Master s Degree programme foresees a rising influence of the European Union s neighbouring states, regarding both EU policymaking and the various globalization processes. The EU s neighbouring regions share a certain number of common problems: Their geographic proximity linking them via mobilities and flows to European developments and trends. Countries directly influenced by such EU policies and strategies as the Euro-Mediterranean Project and the European Neighbourhood Policy. Security issues concerning Eastern Europe and the Balkans, as well as the Mediterranean region: not only military security, but also, for instance, the security of energy supplies. The international division of labour and the restructuring of national economies within the framework of globalization and the emergence of new world powers (Russia, China, India and Brazil), modifying relations between the EU and its neighbours. Training experts on the European Union and its neighbouring regions The AlterEurope Master s Degree programme is designed for four different student profiles, each with a solid education (equivalent to a 3-year French licence degree) in geography, political science, economics or law, and focuses on the European Union s various neighbouring zones (both to the east and to the south) and their relations with the EU and other European international organizations, all within a resolutely multidisciplinary framework. This multidisciplinarity is designed to complement and reinforce the students initial field-specific education, which, far from being negated or diluted, is taken into consideration and made the most of throughout the programme, in accordance with the various job profiles available. Career opportunities Taking into account n the initial field-specific profile that is reinforced during the master s programme and because it develops n expertise regarding all aspects of relations between the European Union and its neighbouring countries the AlterEurope Master s Degree programme prepares students for the following professions: International development consultant for consultancies or public bodies acting as interfaces (such as chambers of commerce and industry in France). International chargé d affaires or international development project manager for a cluster (such as a competitiveness cluster in France), a regional administration or a large firm. Research officer of economics and country risk analysis in the banking and financial sector. Legal expert 1 specialized in the EU s extra-european relations and international trade law, for a law firm, a company s legal department, a consular body or an organization for the development of trade relations. Project manager in environmental risk management for a private or public entity. Project manager in sustainable development for the European Union or an international organization in a neighbouring country. Developer of cooperative programmes for a European Commission delegation, a service of the European administration (notably the External Action Service) or an international organization. Project manager (consultant) for a humanitarian or development NGO in a neighbouring country or region (project auditing and monitoring). In addition, the AlterEurope Master s Degree programme provides both vocational and research training, and so also trains students for the research professions. AlterEurope Master s Degree holders can therefore continue their studies by pursuing a doctoral thesis. 1 At the end of the first year, AlterEurope law students can simultaneously validate the AlterEurope M1 and the Business Law M1 of the Law Department of the Université Jean Monnet of Saint-Étienne, allowing them to take the entrance exam for the École de Formation du Barreau (EFB) law school.

4 Admission Publics concerned: The AlterEurope Master s Degree programme is open to students in both initial and further education/training. For the initial training and apprenticeship training, in addition to the four main fields of access (geography, political science, law and economics), the programme is open to engineering students in the affine domains (according to their application dossier and within the framework of specific projects). Students can also be admitted into the AlterEurope Master s Degree programme via further education, following their selection by the interdisciplinary teaching committee. The AlterEurope Master s Degree programme is open to: Students and auditors (unregistered students) of ENS Lyon, with a licence degree in those fields covered by the master s programme. Master s degree auditors registered at ENS Lyon are accepted following the examination of their application dossier. n Environnement Ville Société ( Environment City Society - EVS, UMR 5600) in the space science field n Groupe d Analyse et de Théorie Economique Lyon Saint- Etienne ( Lyon Saint-Étienne Economic Theory and Analysis Group - GATE LSE, UMR 5824) n Triangle (UMR 5206) in the political science field n Centre de Recherches Critiques sur le Droit ( Centre of Critical Research on Law - CERCRID, UMR 5137) In addition, the master s programme is linked to the Institut des Mondes Urbains ( Urban Worlds Institute ) Laboratory of Excellence (LABEX). The programme s teaching staff also comprises practitioners of professions linked to cooperation between the European Union and its neighbouring countries. Finally, the programme s instruction relies on: n Guest professors and researchers from the European Union and neighbouring regions n Firsthand accounts by entrepreneurs with international experience. Sciences Po Lyon students having completed a 3rd year of studies. Students with a licence degree in management economics or law from the Université Jean Monnet of Saint-Étienne or any other French or foreign university, following their selection by the interdisciplinary teaching committee for the second year. Students can directly integrate the second year of the Alter Europe Master s Degree programme on an exceptional basis, following their selection by the interdisciplinary teaching committee. A teaching staff of experienced teacherresearchers and practitioners The AlterEurope Master s Degree programme relies on research laboratories in the Rhône-Alpes region that contribute to the construction of the Lyon-Saint-Étienne metropolitan centre in terms of research. The programme s teacher-researchers come from the following Saint-Étienne -and Lyon- based UMRs (joint research units):

5 Organization of the AlterEurope professional and research master s degree programme Semester 1 ALTEREUROPE FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE 4 MAJORS Law/Economics/Geography/Political Science Semester 2 CORE CURRICULUM (including a study trip to Brussels at the beginning of the semester) Optional coursework, according to Semester 1 majors Internship* 2 to 4 months (May-June, etc.) or Master s Dissertation Semester 3 CORE CURRICULUM Optional coursework according to the following 4 profession-based options: Law professions Strategy assistance professions Project/programme leadership and development professions Research Semester 4 End-of-studies internship* 4 to 6 months and work placement report (March-June, etc.) or Research Dissertation *International mobility in a neighbouring country obligatory for one of the two work placements. At the end of the first year, students can simultaneously validate the AlterEurope M1 and a field-specific M1 (business law, economic engineering) or the 4th year of Sciences Po, according to their field-specific profile.
