1 How To Upgrade Your Microsoft SQL Server for Version The first step is to gather important information about your existing configuration. Identify The Database Server and SQL Server Version The database server and SQL Server Version are identified in the System Information portlet of the Home Dashboard the information you need is below, however not found in the same order: Record the name of your database server here: Record the SQL Server Version here: If your SQL version is 10.x.x.x or greater, it is Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or higher and no further action is required. If you SQL Server version is lower than 10.x.x.x, it is Microsoft SQL Server version 2005 and an upgrade is required. If an upgrade is required, you can proceed with the Plan and Perform Any Necessary Upgrade procedure below to back up your firm database(s) and install a new instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express Edition. If an upgrade is required and the database server is a full-product edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2005, stop here. You will need to consult with your IT professional to determine if a full version of SQL Server is required. Support is available to discuss your options; however we recommend that you consider all applications that run on SQL Server before making your decision. Call , press 2 for Product Support, and listen to the available options. Plan and Perform Any Necessary Upgrades Before Beginning The Upgrade Before you begin the Microsoft SQL Server upgrade or contact Support, ensure that you have taken the following steps: 1. Create or identify the Database Backup Folder and Database Restore Folder you will use. If the new database server will be running on the same machine as the current database server, the restore folder can be the backup folder itself. 2. Have all staff close and remain out of the program until the upgrade is complete. 3. Open the Firm database on the login screen in and choose Help / Backup to save a backup of the database to the backup folder. 4. If you are installing to a new SQL Server, copy all of the backup files from the backup folder to the restore folder. 5. Verify that you have the v x installation CD or files. If you do not have a copy, download one from the My Product Downloads page of the CS Professional Suite website. Page 1

2 Perform The Upgrade On The New SQL Server Machine 1. Log in to the new database server as a user with full administrative rights. 2. Run Setup.exe from the v x installation CD. 3. If your current version is not X, perform Step1: Select where the Shared Files reside and install to the \WinCSI folder indicated by the Registry Application Path. This should be the Shared Files Folder suggested by the Setup program. 4. Perform Step 2: Configure Database Server. Click the Install a new instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition option. When prompted, enter a name for the new SQL Server instance (we recommend naming this instance SQLEXPRESS unless it already exists). 5. If desired, perform Step 3: Install on this computer, to install the program on the new SQL Server machine. If you choose this option, you can verify successful installation. We recommend performing this step to enable you to test at the server to eliminate possible network issues. 6. If you did not perform Step 3 on the new SQL Server machine, run the desktop setup program on a workstation, if necessary, and open. Restore the database Download Management Studio Express 1. Open Management Studio Express and select your Server name. Under Authentication choose Windows Authentication. Click Connect. Note: The installation will default to: ServerName\CREATIVESOLUTION or SQLEXPRESS. 2. Right click on the ACS_X_Firm Database Tasks Restore Database 3. Choose the From device: radio button under Source for restore and click the ellipse button. Page 2

3 4. Click the Add button. 5. Click on your backup file, and then click OK. 6. Click OK on the Specify Backup Screen Page 3

4 7. Check the Restore checkbox next to your backup. 8. Click the Options icon under the Select a Page section Page 4

5 9. If you are restoring over an existing database check the Overwrite the existing database checkbox. If you are not restoring over an existing database, leave the checkbox blank. Note: ACS databases have the Practice CS name on them. 10. Verify that your data is being saved to the correct location. (look at the paths under the Restore As heading) Correct if necessary. The default location for the data on SQL Server 2005 is C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.X\MSSQL\Data\acs_X_Firm.mdf and C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.X\MSSQL\Data\acs_X_Firm_log.ldf 11. Click OK and close Management Studio Express Test 1. Run from a user profile that has administrative rights to the new SQL Server machine. 2. Log in to the as ADMIN. will prompt you to update the database for version X as necessary. Note: If you encounter any issues while opening the firm databases, contact Support. 3. Close. Page 5

6 Disable SQL Server 2005 If No Other Applications Are Using It If no other applications are using the SQL Server, it is safe to disable the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database server. This will free up resources and improve performance of the database server. If other applications are using the SQL Server, do not disable any Services. 1. Choose Start / Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, then double-click Services. 2. Scroll down the list and locate any items that include the name of the prior instance of SQL Server. Look for SQL Server (INSTANCE) and SQL Server Agent(INSTANCE), where INSTANCE is the name of the instance of SQL Server. 3. Double-click each item you found to open its Properties dialog. 4. Click the General tab. If the Service status indicates that the instance is Started, click the Stop button and wait for the Service status to change to Stopped. 5. In the Startup type field, select Disabled. 6. Click OK to save your changes. Test 1. Test your firm database by logging in to the database as ADMIN. If the firm database is missing from the dropdown or you cannot log in to it, contact Support to re-enable the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 services. Perform The Desktop Setup On All Workstations, As Necessary 1. If the Perform The Upgrade On The New SQL Server Machine step above required Step 1 of Accounting CS v x setup, users running from other workstations will be prompted to perform the desktop setup to install the new version. 2. If your staff do not log in with administrative rights, or if you are in a Terminal Server environment, you should ensure that this installation is performed by a user with administrative rights before your staff resume use of. Allow Users To Resume Using After the successful completion of these procedures, your Practice CS configuration will include Practice CS v x and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition.
