4 ICD-10 Latest News CMS announced it would not deny Medicare claims solely based on the accuracy or specificity of the ICD-10 diagnosis code in the first year of the coding system. Q2. What happens if I use the wrong ICD-10 code, will my claim be denied? A1. While diagnosis coding to the correct level of specificity is the goal for all claims, for 12 months after ICD- 10 implementation, Medicare review contractors will not deny physician or other practitioner claims billed under the Part B physician fee schedule through either automated medical review or complex medical record review based solely on the specificity of the ICD-10 diagnosis code as long as the physician/practitioner used a valid code from the right family. However, a valid ICD-10 code will be required on all claims starting on October 1, It is possible a claim could be chosen for review for reasons other than the specificity of the ICD-10 code and the claim would continue to be reviewed for these reasons. This policy will be adopted by the Medicare Administrative Contractors, the Recovery Audit Contractors, the Zone Program Integrity Contractors, and the Supplemental Medical Review Contractor.

6 SNOMED SNOMED = Systemized Nomenclature of Medicine Comprehensive, multilingual clinical terminology SNOMED is not a Meaningful Use Objective. However, the ONC (Coordinator for Health Information Technology) requires SNOMED in certain areas of the electronic health record. This requirement (which is fulfilled by all McKesson EHR s) must be met in order for an EHR to be certified

10 Diagnosis Code Select Screen for Patient Records and Medical Billing Accessing the Diagnosis Code Select Screen Remember if you are in the Progress Note and want to insert a Diagnosis, simply click on the Pb/Dx button on the tool bar. When this is done, the revised Diagnosis Code Select screen will open, allowing the user to search for and select the appropriate diagnosis. 10

15 DX Code Select Screen Diagnosis Search and HLI As the search process is done, the EMR will connect, via the web, with Health Language, Inc. If your organization is offline or the HLI web service is unavailable, the screen will display diagnosis codes entered manually from Diagnosis Code Maintenance. Each time a diagnosis is selected from the HLI web service, that diagnosis will be entered into the Diagnosis Code Maintenance screen, available for searching during offline periods. 15

29 Changes to the Prenatal Module Prenatal Visit Flowchart Screen Updated Fields The Prenatal Visit Flowchart screen has been updated as follows for Practice Partner Release 11.0: The Code column has been renamed to ICD Code and will identify the ICD-9, ICD-10 or office code associated with the problem that is identified In order to determine whether to insert the ICD-9, ICD-10 or office code into the ICD Code column, the system checks the value of the Switch to ICD-10 codes on field in PRUTils. If a user hovers their mouse over a value in the ICD Code column, a tooltip will display that shows a description for all of the codes ICD-9, ICD-10 and SNOMED Tooltip 31
