The Politics of Art in Fin de Siècle Italy. In my dissertation I argue that Italian intellectuals reenacted the century-long dilemma of action and contemplation as a way to define the role of the man of letters in modern Italy, and the choice between political activism and withdrawal into the cult of art for art's sake.

3 Furthermore, I show that the two models are not opposed but rather intertwined, and their similarities illustrate the relationship between Italian Aestheticism and modern nationalism. Summa cum laude Thesis: Past Tenses in Italian for Anglophone Learners. In my thesis I present a contrastive analysis of the verbal systems of Italian and English, with a focus on past tenses. Based on this, I elaborate several teaching strategies which facilitate the acquisition of such tenses for Anglophone students. Advisor: Doctor Laura Brugé.
