2 I Reading and Use of English Digital champions help older people go online by Moya Irvine For most of us, s, Facebook, Amazon and ebay are part of everyday life. But for millions of older people, they could be from another planet. In the UK, 5.7 million people over the age of 65 don t know how to use the Internet. Now, a UK charity has set up a project to teach older people how to get online. The Internet can be very useful for older people. If you can t get out of the house, online shopping and banking are a great help. If you can t get to a bookshop or a library, Amazon can be your link to the things you love to read. And if your children and grandchildren live far away, , Facebook and Skype are wonderful ways to keep in touch. Age UK is asking younger computer users the charity calls them digital champions to teach older people how to use modern communications technology. In March, the charity organised a My Friends Online Week to give older people a chance to attend classes. In one project, pupils from a London school taught older people during their lunch break. Other older people went to classes at libraries or community centres to be taught by the digital champions. One elderly man interviewed by the charity during a lesson said he didn t have a clue before his computer course. He was thrilled with the Internet. It tells you things, it shows you things it s just amazing, he said. The charity encourages younger people not to wait for the next My Friends Online Week, but to offer help to older people they may know grandparents, relatives or neighbours. The experience can be very rewarding for the champion as well as the person they help. One of the school pupils who took part in this year s project told The Times: It felt like a good way to spend my time, so when it came to the end, you didn t know whether to be sad that you were no longer going to see them or happy that it had happened. adapted from: READ ON, May 2012 Seite 2 von 10

He celebrated his 28 th birthday, got married to Priscilla Chan and on May 18, also sold his company s shares on the stock market for the first time. Facebook, the world s biggest social network site, has changed the way people communicate with each other. Mr Zuckerberg founded it in 2004 as a way for his fellow students at Harvard University to keep in touch. Today, the site is used by 900 million people all over the world. Last year the company, which has its headquarters in Menlo Park, California, made a profit of $1 billion from revenues of $3.7 billion, 85% of it from advertising. Most of its money comes from the US, although the majority of Facebook users live outside the US. Investors are afraid that Facebook s advertising will not grow as quickly as it has in the past few years. Although share values have fallen, Mr Zuckerberg is still an immensely rich young man.
