1 1 Venue: James Watt Centre at Heriot-Watt University, Riccarton, Edinburgh Paying Payment will be to the University of Edinburgh (even though the meeting will be held at Heriot-Watt University). NOTE: for paying, if you are using a Mac computer, use Internet Explorer (the payment web site does not work correctly with Safari, unless you change the screen resolution to 1280 x 1024). It is unfortunately necessary to re-enter all your address etc information on the payment web site. Go to Enter your address and type in a password of your own choosing (and store it, in case you decide not to complete the payment until later). Then click PROCEED Select: College/School/Dept = Inst. of Evolutionary Biology Category = Conference Product = PopGroup 2005 It should then display the options for payment. Tick the relevant options, then when complete, click PROCEED Check the details shown, then click CONFIRM You are then transferred to the secure WORLDPAY site where you are asked for your credit card details. You only actually make a payment if you type in your credit card details and then confirm the payment afterwards. You can cancel at any time before this. Cost Plenary speakers need not pay. Accommodation and all other costs will be covered for them by the organisers. The payment part of the web site is not yet working. The dinner will be on Thursday, December 15 th, and will be followed by a Ceilidh. The conference centre does not have a large enough room that evening for dinner for our entire meeting, but limits us to 100 people for the dinner itself, which will be a buffet dinner so that people can mingle. Others will have to take the regular dinner, but can then join the rest for the Ceilidh. Details will be announced later. To be sure of a place for the Conference Dinner, please book early.

2 2 Help with costs for students The British Ecological Society offer a limited number of bursaries to support student attendance at meetings. These awards finance 50% of accommodation costs. Students giving talks or posters in ecological areas of population genetics may want to apply for this. Students need to pay their accommodation costs in full and submit claim forms directly to the BES office to be reimbursed. You must submit the form several weeks before the start of the meeting. See We are also trying to get sponsorship to help with costs from other sources as well, and we particularly hope to get help for non-uk students. An announcement will be made on Evoldir if we succeed. Students will need to pay their accommodation costs in full and will be reimbursed afterwards.

3 3 Arrival in Edinburgh Maps The city of Edinburgh Heriot-Watt campus: A supposedly printable Edinburgh Campus Map (180Kb Acrobat File, Print landscape) is available, but NOTE that it did not work with the Safari web browser on my Mac (OSX); it did work with Internet Explorer, however. The site provides information on getting to the campus (also summarised below). Here is how to get to the Heriot-Watt Riccarton campus. Train Waverley (the first Edinburgh stop if you are coming from London or the south) is at the east end of Princes Street, and Haymarket station is at the west end. Many of the trains from London to Edinburgh continue to Glasgow and all of these stop at Haymarket station. (The nearest railway station to Heriot-Watt University, Curriehill is one mile from the campus, and trains go to this station from Edinburgh Waverley and Haymarket and Glasgow Central, but the web site for the university suggests that this is not a good option, and taxis are unlikely to be available at this station). Taxi: Taxis are available at both Waverley and Haymarket railway stations. The distance to the Riccarton campus of Heriot-Watt is somewhat less from Haymarket station. The cost would be at least 8. Bus: Lothian Buses numbers 25, 34 and 45 go to the campus Web site for Lothian Buses: Maps of the bus routes in the city centre are at Services 25, 34, 45 and N25 serve Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh Campus (Riccarton). The journey to Heriot-Watt University takes approximately 30 minutes from the city centre. Printable maps can be found by selecting the bus numbers with the Select service no. button near the top of the page. Bus tickets are 1, and you must give the driver the exact money (no change can be given by the driver). Day Saver tickets, to ride all day, cost The 25 is the most frequent bus. It goes at least every 10 minutes during the day, from Princes Street (Waverley Steps) along Princes Street, and via Haymarket (coming out of Haymarket station, turn right into Dalry Road, and the bus stops on the opposite side of the street. This bus route runs until midnight, after which N25 operates every hour from the top of Leith Street (Omni Cinema) via Princes Street and Haymarket. The 34 runs approximately every 15 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes in the evenings. It goes between Leith (Ocean Terminal), also via Princes Street but then via Fountainbridge, not Haymarket. The 45 starts from St Andrew Square via the Mound, Tollcross and Bruntsfield every 30 minutes.

4 From Edinburgh Airport Web: Edinburgh International Airport is served by scheduled national and international flights. The airport is on the west of the city, three miles from the campus. The journey by taxi takes about 10 minutes. By car: See maps above. There is free parking on the campus. Arrival at the James Watt Centre Go to the Reception desk of the James Watt Centre. They will direct you to the Registration desk, which will be open from 5pm. The building will be closed at 9pm, but there is a bell (on the left of the entrance) for the night porter (all night). The Reception desk or the night porter will give room keys. 4

5 Rooms, meals etc. Most rooms are single, but there are a few double-bedded rooms for couples (sorry, no twin rooms to share and save on costs). Details are given at the following web address: Charges (paid via credit card) for either Wireless access in the James Watt Centre or Ethernet access in guest bedrooms start at 5.00 for 1 hour (actual time online, which can be spread over any period, e.g. up to 1 hour total Internet over several days). There is a cash machine, a bank and some shops on the campus, but no restaurants other than the one in the James Watt Centre. We have therefore included all meals in the package price. This includes a buffet lunch and self-service dinner (both with vegetarian options available), plus coffee and tea in the morning and afternoon breaks. There is a water cooler in the corridor if you go right from the reception desk. Luggage can be left in a secure room on Friday. Ask at the reception desk. Audiovisual equipment. PowerPoint is provided (but no slide projector). You can bring your own laptop if you wish. Speakers should bring their talks to the room at least half an hour before the beginning of the session in which they will be speaking. This is 8.30 am for the first session of the morning. Poster boards are available in the corridor surrounding the main auditorium. You can use either Velcro or pins. If there are many posters, we may have to run two separate sessions.
