2 Worksheet A: Local Farmer I am a local farmer. I agree with this idea. Our products will always be fresh because they won t travel a long distance before they reach consumers. Consumers can eat local food in season, when they are especially delicious. Moreover, since the products won t travel a long distance, the cost of transportation will be low. Then we can sell our products at low prices. If you support local farmers, the local economy will improve. Now Japan s food self-sufficiency rate is only 40% and we depend on other countries for many products. However, if you eat more local food, Japan will not depend on other countries. So, the situation in other countries and our relations with them will not affect the amount of food we have. Today, global warming is a serious problem and producing too much carbon dioxide is one cause of this problem. Transporting food by ships, airplanes, or trucks produces carbon dioxide and the farther food is transported, the more carbon dioxide is produced. For this reason, choosing local products is an effective way to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emissions. Finally, I think more local products should be used to make school lunches to give children an opportunity to learn how local farm products are used. It is good for dietary education and children will learn more about local agriculture.

5 Worksheet B: Local Consumer I am a local consumer. I don t think this is a good idea. Although I understand the goal of this project, I don t agree with the method. If the local area doesn t have rich soil and agriculture is not successful, this method won t work. If we use this method, we can only eat the kinds of food local people produce. For example, if we live far away from the sea, we cannot eat fish. I live in Saitama. In Saitama, we are unable to fish. If we have to think about the distance food travels before it reaches the consumer, we won t be able to get fish anymore. In addition, we will not be able to eat food produced in other areas. For example, when I eat strawberries, I prefer strawberries produced in Fukuoka. When I eat potatoes, I prefer potatoes produced in Hokkaido. I know these products are also grown in Saitama, but I still want to be able to choose the best food. Even though it is expensive, I still like to eat rice produced in Niigata the most. I think consumers should have the right to choose what they eat and enjoy their meals. This project may seem like a good idea, but it is not going to be a law. Everyone won t have to follow it, so for these reasons, I think it won t work well.

8 Worksheet C: Foreign Farmer I am a farmer in a developing country. I produce coffee beans and export them to Japan. I support my family by making money with this work. I don t agree with this idea because it is not fair. Japan exports cars to my country and earns a lot of money. I think we also should have the right to export our products to Japan and get money. That is fair, isn t it? You may say if the distance food travels before it reaches the consumer is longer, it will cause more carbon dioxide emissions. That s true, but for developing countries, all exports are very important. What will happen to us if foreign countries only support the environment-friendly campaign and stop buying our products? First, we may lose our jobs. Then we may have to cut down trees in our forests to get money. We know deforestation is bad for the environment, but we will not have a choice. We have to have money to buy food to live. If you buy our products, you can help people in developing countries live better. With this plan, you are thinking only about your local people and the environment, but this decision is connected to other societies around the world. We should try to think of other ways to solve this problem that will make everyone happy.
