1 VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY Department of Biology BIOL : HUMAN ANATOMY FOR BIOLOGY MAJORS Fall 2016 SYLLABUS COURSE DESCRIPTION Human Anatomy for Biology Majors is a medical case based course designed for students interested in learning anatomy but who are not eligible for BIOL205: Basic Human Anatomy. The course provides students with a foundation in human anatomy. There is no specific laboratory section for this course; however students will have access to models and charts of human anatomy. Optional opportunities to view human specimens are scattered throughout the course. Correlation with human physiology and pathophysiology are also discussed throughout the semester. PREREQUISITES Prerequisites: BIOL 151, 152 and BIOZ 151, 152, with minimum grades of C. GENEARL LEARNING OUTCOMES At the completion of this course, you should be able to: 1. Develop a vocabulary of appropriate terminology so to effectively communicate information related to anatomy. 2. Recognize anatomical structures on photographs, drawings, and medical images. 3. Describe the arrangement of anatomic features and explain their functions. 4. Explain the interrelationship within and between anatomical systems of the human body. 5. Sequence physiological events involving multiple organs (e.g. pathways for blood flow, pathways for nerve impulse conduction, movement of digesting food throughout the gastrointestinal tract, movement of urine through the urinary system, and so on). 6. Synthesize ideas to make a connection between knowledge of anatomy and real-world situations. 7. Discuss problems and formulate answers to questions, in a collaborative group, geared toward learning and applying course content. REQUIRED MATERIALS Text: McKinley and O'Loughlin, Human Anatomy, 4th ed, McGraw-Hill Publishing. Optional human specimen laboratories: If you plan to attend the optional human specimen laboratories you must have a student Identification "Prox" Cards: If your VCU student ID card does not have a 5- or 6-digit prox number on the back (lower right side), go to the VCU Card Office (Technology Administration Building, 701 West Broad Street, ) and have a new card issued AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Students will submit their prox # via Blackboard. More information will be provided on the first day of class. 1
2 Blackboard: Blackboard is used to post announcements, course syllabus, class schedule, chapter outlines, handouts, assignments, grades, and so on. You need your VCU address and password to log in to Blackboard. GRADE DETERMINATION Final Grade Scale is based on a possible total of 500 points = A = B = C = D Below 300 = F How you earn your points: Exams: Tests 1 5 = 60 points each Final Cumulative Exam = 100 points Homework = 55 points (eleven homework assignments, 5 points each) Case summary wrap up reports = 45 points (5 case study summaries, 9 points each) Information about the assessments 1. Examinations: a. During the class period, the students will have access to models and charts of human anatomy. These models and charts will be used in the examinations. b. Information from the case studies may be used in the examinations. c. Cadaver specimens will not be used in the examinations. d. Exams will be in the format of multiple choice, multiple answer, short answer, and short essay. 2. Homework will be performed using an online system. The purpose of the homework is to help you prepare for the in-class activities. Due dates are for this assignment are found on the course schedule. Detailed information about the homework system can be found on Blackboard. 3. Case summary wrap up reports: The purpose of the case study wrap up is for you to synthesize and apply the course material. Students will be placed into groups by the instructor. Groups will write a case study summary and submit it through Blackboard. Due dates for this assignment are found on the course schedule. Detailed information about the case study wrap up, including a grading rubric, can be found on Blackboard. 4. Homework and Case summary wrap up reports are due by 11:59 pm on the date specified in the syllabus. COURSE POLICIES I respond only to VCU addresses. Always identify yourself by full name and course number. Politeness and proper grammar, spelling and punctuation are expected. I may not respond to an if I believe these expectations are not met. Lectures, scheduled lab, open lab, SI sessions, tutoring and marathon sessions for BIOL205: You are not allowed to attend the lectures, scheduled labs, open labs, SI sessions, tutoring or marathon sessions for BIOL205. Human specimens: There will be limited, optional access to human specimens during this course. Dates and times for this optional access are found in the syllabus. 2
3 Cadaver specimens offer a valuable opportunity to view systems of the body simultaneously and to discuss how they function synchronously. Please use the utmost respect in the lab when working with cadavers. The donation of a human body is an immeasurable gift for learning human anatomy. Students are not permitted to take pictures of the cadavers or specimens, as this violates privacy agreements with the Virginia Anatomical Program. Electronic devices: You may use laptops, tablets, smartphones, and audio (not video) recording devices during class for class purposes only. If you are caught checking , sending text messages, surfing the internet, and so on, you will be asked to leave the classroom. Cell phones, smart watches, pagers and other electronic equipment must be turned off during class and during exams and may not be on your person during exams (see Honor Code Policy and the examination policy, below). Please do not take pictures of lecture slides or video record in-class activities. Five points will be deducted from your final score if you video any portion of the class or take pictures of the lecture slides. Withdrawal from the course: Reminder - Students who cease attending class must officially withdraw from the course. A grade of "F" will be assigned if you cease coming to class and do not withdraw from the class. Policies related to assessments: 1. Collaboration is permitted only on the Case Study Wrap Up report. Please see the Honor Code/Policy. 2. You can have writing instruments and an eraser at your seat during an examination. a. No other belongings other than writing instruments and an eraser will be allowed at your seat during the examination. No water bottles, food, personal care items such as tissues, are allowed at your seat during an examination. All other belongings brought to the room will be stored in an area designated by the instructor. b. Headwear can be worn during the examinations for religious and cultural purposes only. No hoodies, tops with large pockets, caps/hats, or headbands are to be worn during the examination. If you wear one of the listed items during and exam, and the item is not for religious or cultural purposes, you must remove the item. c. There will be a five point deduction from your exam score if your electronic device sounds (rings, beeps, and so on) during the examination. d. You will receive a score of 0 for the exam if you have an electronic device on your person during the examination. You may be charged with an Honor Code violation if an electronic device is found on your person during the examination. 3. You must present your VCU ID when turning in your examinations. 4. Examination make-up policy: You are required to take all examinations on the day they are scheduled. If you are unable to attend a scheduled course exam, you must notify me prior to, or within 24 hours, of the exam. There is no guarantee of a make-up exam, however, a make- up exam will only be considered with proper documentation of a valid excuse. The validity of your excuse will be evaluated by the course instructor. If you fail to provide proper documentation, you will forgo the opportunity to make up the exam. Failure to take the make-up exam on the scheduled date and time agreed upon will result in a "0" for the exam. Make-up exams will consist of essay questions, short answer and/or oral examinations. 5. Homework make-up policy: You will have plenty of time to complete each of the homework assignments. Therefore, if you do not complete an assessment by the due date, you will receive a score of zero for that assessment. There are no extra assignments or dropped homework scores 6. A test review will be held the Fridays following the grade posting of the examinations. This review will be held in LSB 130 from 1 3 pm. This is your opportunity to review your examination. Changes in this review 3
4 VCU POLICIES schedule or location will be posted on Blackboard. No electronic devices will be allowed during the examination review. 7. Questions about grading of the tests must be discussed within one week after the exam grade is posted on Blackboard. Grade changes will not be discussed after that time. If a student wishes to challenge an answer, he/she must provide, in writing, the reason for the challenge including textbook or other source citation. VCU Honor Code Policy: VCU recognizes that honesty, truth, and integrity are values central to its mission to advance knowledge and student success both in the world VCU students will enter, or return to, once they have graduated and in the university community as a microcosm of that world. It is a student s responsibility to ask course instructors to clarify requirements for each assignment if they are uncertain. ( The current VCU Honor System policy statement and purpose can be found in here: Students suspected of violating the Honor Code will be reported to Office of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity. A guilty ruling could result in the assignment of F for the course with Honor Code violation noted on the transcript. All students will be expected to pledge their work. Examples of Honor Code violations relevant to this course include but are not limited to the following: possessing a copy, or using someone else's copy, of an old test or exam to study sharing information about questions on a quiz, test, or exam completing on-line homework with another person having a copy of class notes at your seat, or written on your clothes or on your skin during tests or exams cheating or lying in any way related to quizzes, tests, or exams The Honor System must be upheld and enforced by each member of the Virginia Commonwealth University community.
