10 Courses included Reporting global change. The transformation of the state. Globalisation, culture and the roles of the media Examinations included in the degree programme Line A1 Heading Course title Course description Academic objectives Method of teaching Language of instruction Examination terms Heading Course title Course description Academic objectives Text Reporting global change Reporting global change will be a common basis for the students of the next two disciplines within the module. The discipline focuses on introducing global change, the global agenda and globalisation. What are the key international issues? What are the main viewpoints on these issues? How are these issues reported globally? Through case studies of war reporting, famine and reporting on Europe, students gain insight into issues as well as reporting. In assessing the student s performance, emphasis is placed on the extent to which the student: is familiar with the content of current global issues and current global thinking about how these issues may be resolved; has awareness and understanding of how global issues are reported, or not reported; has an understanding of how national and global perspectives are becoming intertwined; has the ability to undertake analytical journalism. Classes will be based on instructor presentations, group discussions, plenary debates, student presentations and student essays. English Method of evaluation: Written, individual Evaluation and assessment: No, 7 point. Duration: 5 days, 5 standard pages Weighting: 10 ECTS credits. Text The transformation of the state The objective of the course is to give a comprehensive introduction to the debate about the transformation of the sovereign state. What arguments are being made, how are different positions motivated, empirically and theoretically? The focus will be on economic globalisation, political changes (multi-level governance) and the consequences for democracy, identity and citizenship, sovereignty and the prospects for peace and war, conflict and cooperation. An answer will be provided to the overall research question: what kind of transformation is the sovereign state undergoing? In assessing the student s performance, emphasis is placed on the extent to which the student: 10

11 is acquainted with the debate about state transformation in the context of globlalisation is able to identify and evaluate the theoretical and empirical foundations of the major positions in the debate demonstrates an understanding of central economic, political, and cultural aspects of globalisation Method of teaching Language of instruction Examination terms Heading Course title Course description Academic objectives Method of teaching Language of instruction Examination terms Classes will be based on instructor presentations, group discussions, plenary debates, student presentations, and student essays. English Method of evaluation: Written, individual Evaluation and assessment: Appointed external, 7 point Duration: 7 days, 10 standard pages Weighting: 10 ECTS credits. Text Globalisation, culture and the roles of the media The objective of this course is to introduce and discuss a wide range of views and theories regarding the role the media play in the formation of communities within, across and beyond national cultures. The main theme of media and community will evolve from discussions of how media were an intrinsic part of the construction of nation states. After that we will look at how media, in different ways, have been perceived to both maintain and threaten national cultures. We will, however, from the start and throughout, also question this interpretive frame of national cultures by looking at notions of inter- and post-national media and communities. Such perspectives will partly be introduced through audience studies. In assessing the student s performance, emphasis is placed on the extent to which the student: understands the main theoretical positions with regard to media, community and culture is able to analyse and discuss the relations between media, culture, politics, social relations, consumption and commerce on both a micro and a macro level is able to engage critically with a range of materials and media forms Classes will consist of a mixture of instructor presentations, plenary discussions, student presentations, group discussions and student essays. English Method of evaluation: Written, individual Evaluation and assessment: Appointed external, 7 point Duration: 7 days, 10 standard pages Weighting: 10 ECTS credits. 11

To calculate standard pages, both text and notes are included, but not the front page, table of contents and bibliography. Written submissions that do not comply with these stipulations cannot be accepted for assessment. For the university s regulations regarding the use of computers for s, see The possibilities for project-oriented procedures are stated in the description of the individual study element, within the frameworks of the university s rules regarding project-oriented procedures, see An exemption is a deviation from the regulations that normally apply for the area in question. Exemption can be granted on the basis of an application sent to the authority that has the power to grant such exemption. An application for exemption must be submitted to the Board of Studies.
