1 Blue Planet Introduction Cyan Blue Planet is the first Software- Defined Network (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) platform purpose- built for service providers and the wide area network. Blue Planet is designed to simplify end- to- end service deployment and orchestration across networks comprised of traditional network elements, including Cyan s Z- Series and 3 rd party devices, as well as virtualized SDN/NFV- based components. Blue Planet is a highly programmable system supporting a suite of open APIs to enable integration with existing operations systems, and to accelerate service and application development in multi- vendor, multi- domain network environments. Blue Planet Components Blue Planet is comprised of multiple individual components. This includes the Blue Planet platform, which encompasses the core infrastructure and network services, as well as a family of Blue Planet Applications. 2 Blue Planet Applications Planet Orchestrate Management, automation, and orchestration of services across the telco cloud and the WAN from one pane of glass. Planet Operate Service provisioning and multi- layer management, with 3D visualization. Planet View Real- time and historical verification of service and network performance. Planet Design Simplified design and planning of multi- layer networks and services, with Google Maps integration. Planet Inventory Network inventory and capacity reporting. Northbound APIs Blue Planet supports a suite of open northbound APIs for service management and orchestration. The APIs enable Blue Planet to integrate with operational support systems (OSSs) and other critical software systems, as well as allow customers and partners to develop their own applications on top of the platform. Blue Planet abstracts the network, hiding the complexity of different technology domains, technology layers, and multi- vendor equipment to transform a network into an easy- to- use, programmable resource. Users are presented with a simplified view of the network, through which they can develop new services as well as manipulate existing ones. Users of the API can define new and/or modify existing services by specifying service end- points and manipulating key service attributes. A variety of Blue Planet APIs are available to customers today. This includes a Carrier Ethernet Services API, which customers utilize to automate multi- vendor provisioning and service activation. Other northbound APIs simplify service verification, testing, inventory, and more. Third- Party Element Adapters Blue Planet utilizes software adapters and southbound APIs to interface with a wide array of network elements. Southbound Blue Planet APIs embrace both new and legacy protocols, ranging from OpenFlow and SNMP to TL1, extending SDN capabilities to more than 50 third- party devices from 25 different suppliers. 2014, Cyan, Inc. 3 Planet Orchestrate Planet Orchestrate is Cyan s innovative multi- domain and multi- technology application for the Blue Planet platform that allows network operators to leverage the service agility, automation and flexibility offered by SDN, NFV, and the cloud. Planet Orchestrate can be customized to suit the needs of diverse network operator environments and applications. The system's flexible architecture integrates capabilities that can be used individually or in combination to support different use cases: Multi- Domain Service Orchestration, NFV Orchestration, and Cloud Orchestration. Architected to be entirely modular, data and template- driven, Planet Orchestrate provides the intelligent allocation, creation and management of virtual and physical service resources including network elements, storage, compute, and applications across the telco cloud and WAN from a single- pane- of- glass. Purpose- built for network operators, Planet Orchestrate accelerates service providers transition to SDN and NFV, allowing them to be more nimble in responding to customer and market demands. Programmable Network and Service Orchestration Planet Orchestrate creates a highly programmable and interoperable system that is agnostic to the type of resources or services being orchestrated. Through its use of service and resource information templates and open APIs, Planet Orchestrate supports interoperability and interaction with the industry s widest range of operational support systems (OSSs) and other high- layer applications, cloud management platforms, physical network elements and cloud- or NFV- based virtual resources. Manages, automates and orchestrates services comprised of physical and virtual resources across the telco cloud and WAN. Flexible architecture integrates NFV, Cloud, and Multi- Domain Service Orchestration capabilities. Supports service chaining of legacy and new virtualized, SDN/NFV- based resources Accelerates delivery of new high- margin services such as NFV- enabled Ethernet Open system interoperates with different OSSs, cloud platforms, SDN controllers, NMS/EMSs, network elements and VNFs. 4 Planet Operate The Planet Operate application includes a revolutionary multi- layer management system providing conventional FCAPS functionality in addition to more advanced capabilities such as 3D visualization and multi- vendor support to simplify network configuration, monitoring, fault resolution, and operation. Through the integration of object- based intelligence based on TMF MTNM and ITU G.800 modeling principles, Planet Operate delivers a unique awareness of service and transport layers, nodes and connections, as well as their inter- dependencies. The advanced 3D visualization provided by Blue Planet, combined with the ability to virtualize network views based on customer, service type, market/region or other factors, deliver a unified and user- friendly view to simplify network management and accelerate the introduction of new services. The robust Blue Planet architecture scales in a distributed and highly- available manner to support large networks consisting of thousands of Z- Series platforms and other network elements supporting tens of thousands of services. Network Visualization Blue Planet s 3D visualization capabilities at the network- and node- level help network operators better understand line card and shelf associations at the node level, as well as which ports or paths are in service or on standby at the network level. The visual display gives users a broader perspective of the network, boosting confidence in the accuracy of configurations and reducing errors when making additions or changes. Multi- layer management simplifies network operations to accelerate the introduction of new services and lower costs. Advanced user interface with 3D visualization provides more intuitive visibility and control. Multi- layer fault correlation enables faster problem resolution and improves service availability. Multi- vendor alarm and topology management for Blue Orbit partners and other third- party products. The trail analyzer application shows physical and logical linkages between nodes. 5 Planet View The Planet View application includes groundbreaking SLA verification and analytics instruments for carrier Ethernet networks. Planet View provides proactive SLA monitoring and web portal- based reporting in multi- vendor networks for service providers and their customers. By simplifying SLA compliance management and verification, Blue Planet allows service providers to deliver differentiated Ethernet services that enhance the customer experience and increase revenues. Real- time and historical analytics of network parameters and threshold- crossing events enables service providers and customers to analyze trends, perform capacity planning, improve network Enhanced Visibility Planet View provides customized performance monitoring portals for individual end- customers or internal users. Real- time and historical service performance data is presented in Planet View, which utilizes customer- specific, virtual network views at the service layer, as well as tabular and graphical reports to convey information in easy to understand formats. Multi- Vendor, Multi- Technology Solution Blue Planet provides detailed SLA performance reporting information across multi- vendor network environments. While the verification and analytics functions are designed to support a broad range of performance management standards, today s support includes Ethernet- based SLA performance reporting using the Y.1731 Ethernet OAM standards, IP SLAs, ATM SLAs, and certain optical layer parameters. These functions work in combination with Cyan s Z- Series family of packet- optical transport platforms and specific third- party products. availability and more. Automatically delivers detailed SLA performance reporting for availability, latency, jitter, throughput, packet loss and other key Ethernet quality parameters. 6 Planet Design The Planet Design application allows service providers to design multi- layer networks quickly and cost- effectively. Leveraging advanced algorithms and an intuitive point- and- click interface, Planet Design simplifies and accelerates the planning of multi- layer networks. Planning starts in the fiber layer and rises up through the wavelength, OTN, and packet transport layers, to deliver the most efficient and cost- effective network design for any given traffic requirement. In addition to cost- optimized network designs, Planet Design can model and predict end- to- end latency across multiple network layers by taking into account the distances between nodes and the type of processing taking place along planned routes. Planet Design can auto- generate a complete network bill of materials (BOM) that includes equipment configuration and installation checklists. Network designs can be also be uploaded to Planet Operate to allow seamless migration from the network design to operation. Furthermore, Planet Design integrates with Google Maps to illustrate the location of network nodes and enable sales prospecting with local businesses. Planet Design is optimized for planning and designing multi- layer networks based on the Cyan Z- Series packet- optical transport platforms (P- OTPs). Over time, applications will be extended to support Blue Orbit partner equipment and other third- party devices. Multi- layer network planning delivers performance- and cost- optimized network design. Cloud- based, point- and- click interface simplifies the planning process. Analyzes end- to- end latency across multiple network layers. Auto- generates a complete BOM to accelerate the deployment of new services. Operates in conjunction with Planet Operate to create a living network planning and orchestration tool. Advanced path computation algorithms ensure the most efficient design for any given traffic requirement. Integrates with Google Maps view to align sales focus with network resources. 7 Planet Inventory Planet Inventory provides inventory reporting for multi- layer, multi- vendor packet- optical networks. As well, it supports integration with existing inventory systems via RESTful northbound APIs. It is a key component of the Blue Planet SDN platform and is designed to operate independently or collaboratively with the other three Blue Planet applications. With its ability to deliver full- featured asset and circuit inventory reporting in multi- vendor networks, Planet Inventory simplifies inventory reporting and verification optimizes network operations. The application collates all network infrastructure data and keeps it up to date, helping to streamline processes that improve operational performance. normalize asset data from multiple sources Enhanced Visibility, Flexible Deployment Planet Inventory provides an intuitive web- based graphical user portal. Users can access a standard set of reports or create custom reports to suit their specific needs and applications. Because it is cloud- enabled, Planet Inventory can be deployed as a Software- as- a- Service (SaaS) application. This approach minimizes a network operator s infrastructure spend and requires no upfront licensing fees, thereby accelerating the service delivery process and reducing costs. Rich Multivendor Data Support Planet Inventory is designed to support multi- layer, multi- vendor networks. This enables the application to provide detailed physical and logical reporting information across network environments, including the Cyan Z- Series family of packet- optical transport platforms as well as equipment from third- party network equipment vendors. Because the asset and circuit data reported by Planet Inventory uses the network as the database, operators can manage network maintenance more efficiently and increase service velocity. This eliminates the problem of off- line inventory data not being aligned with the network. 8 Technical Specifications Platform Software The core platform includes the Blue Planet OS, hypervisor, messaging system, middleware, and web portal, all running on a scalable, distributed computing environment. It also includes network services such as databases, inventory and asset management, topology management, and APIs for application development. Deployment Models Two different deployment models are supported for the Blue Planet platform. The platform is generally hosted on a dedicated hardware appliance, but it can be run in VMWare with virtual machine (VMs).* Hardware Appliance There are three options for the hardware appliance (or VM): base, medium and large. The required hardware depends on the Blue Planet software bundle and the number of network nodes and/or virtual network functions to be managed.
