4 Advanced Program in Project Management The Advanced Program in Project Management is designed for those responsible for managing large, complex, strategic and mission-critical undertakings. The program provides the perspective, tools and expertise necessary to successfully realize results. We build on this foundation to create advanced leadership abilities in managing projects. The program integrates advanced concepts, tools and approaches with extensive hands-on learning opportunities. The program is delivered over seven comprehensive modules. A comprehensive project simulation is interwoven through the program to provide an opportunity to integrate the full scope of learning in a practical and applied way. You will draw on your full range of skills and expertise available to initiate, plan and manage a complex and challenging project undertaking in collaboration with a team of your peers. Module 1: Project Management Fundamentals & Organizational Considerations Learn how to effectively evaluate, select and prioritize projects, and the considerations in implementing an organizational project management capability. Module 2: Personality Preferences & TEAM DYNAMICS Understand how to effectively interact and communicate with others, and how different preferences influence team dynamics, communication and work styles. Module 3: Planning The Project Principles Gain appreciation for the principles of planning projects, identifying stakeholders and supporting project justification. 5 PMP Exam Preparation Workshop You have heard that the examination for the Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification is challenging and you want to be prepared. You have also heard about boot camps that emphasize cramming over content and you are looking for a training experience with a more lasting impact. If this sounds like you, our PMP Exam Preparation Workshop is the workshop that you need. The PMP Certification is one of the most recognized project management certifications in North America. A recent study found that PMPs earn between 8% and 15% more than project managers without their designation. For many industries and organizations, certification is becoming a requirement. Those with the PMP certification are recognized experts within their organization. Achieving the PMP designation requires both experience and knowledge of the project management standard defined by PMI: the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK). The workshop is also suitable for preparation for the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM), a certification that has been more recently launched by PMI. You will also understand how the ten knowledge areas interact with the process groups in managing projects. Understand, in detail, the sub-processes of the PMBoK and the nuances and meanings of each of the definitions within each sub-process. This includes comprehensive understanding of the inputs/tools & techniques/output model underlying the PMBoK. Be able to practically align the framework of the PMBoK with a concrete understanding of how the project management process works within your organization. Be able to rapidly construct a success sheet of process and knowledge areas to be used as a supporting tool in studying for the PMP examination. APPM & PMP Mark Mullaly, Ph.D., PMP President & Chief Organizational Therapist, Interthink Consulting Mark Mullaly is a senior management consultant with over 25 years experience of managing projects in a range of industries, including information technology, communications, utilities, oil & gas, engineering, construction, finance, insurance, the arts and research & development. Mark Mullaly has provided strategic planning and project management services to a number of leading companies throughout Canada, as well as leading comprehensive organizational development, process implementation, software development and change management projects focussed on the creation of effective project organizations. He is one of the foremost experts in organizational project management in North America. Mark Mullaly is a regular columnist on projectmanagement.com. He has been a sessional instructor with the University of Alberta School of Business, and is lead instructor and program developer of the PM certificate programs offered by the University of Alberta School of Business Executive Education program. He is past-president of the Northern Alberta Chapter of the Project Management Institute. APPM Eldon Wig, B.Sc., M.Sc., PMP Eldon Wig is a customer-focused results-driven senior leader with over 25 years of global project management experience. He has successfully served both private and public sectors, in a variety of industries including communications, finance institution investment, and power. As a valued consultant, his expertise includes strategic planning, operational management, technology commercialization, research and development, negotiation/contract management, business development, resource management, and relationship building. Eldon is highly skilled in managing technology-based business complexities through effective leadership of cross-functional teams. APPM Janice Thomas, B.Sc., MBA, Ph.D. Janice Thomas is a professor at the Centre for Innovative Management (CIM) in the Faculty of Business at Athabasca University. She is currently the Director of the Project Management Research Institute at Athabasca, a global online initiative linking reflective practitioners with ideas and researchers. She is also visiting professor with the University of Technology, Sydney and Bond University, Australia where she supervises Masters and PhD research students. Prior to becoming an academic, Janice spent 10 years as a project manager in the fields of Information Technology and Organizational Change. In addition to research and teaching, Janice maintains close ties to the practical realities of project management in organizations through consulting and membership in professional associations.
