3 What is the Residence Life Leadership Certificate? The Residence Life Leadership Certificate is an opportunity open to all students living in the residence halls at the University of Arizona. The certificate is a great way to receive recognition for the outstanding leadership skills you are building during your time on campus. By participating in the certificate program, you will be joining a group of committed residential student leaders who are actively improving their leadership skills while addressing issues of social justice, sustainability, diversity, and global citizenship. Why should I participate in the Residence Life Leadership Certificate? There are number of valuable reasons to participate in Residence Life Leadership Certificate, including: Receive recognition for all the outstanding leadership skills you are developing during your time in the Residence Halls Learn valuable work-related skills that will set you apart in the professional world Enhance your resume or professional portfolio Have fun and meet new life-long friends How do I earn a Residence Life Leadership Certificate? The leadership certificate is designed to be completed within the course of one year. By partaking in programs, reflection, and skill development, you will easily be able to meet the requirements of the certificate program. The certificate is broken up into five categories: 1. Leadership and Involvement Transcript 2. Dynamic Leadership 3. Social Responsibility 4. Professional Skill Development 5. Capstone Reflection To sign up for the Residence Life Leadership Certificate: 1. Send an to [email protected] that includes your: Name Residence Hall Phone Number Year in School 2. Begin completing requirements and tracking your accomplishments through the Leadership & Involvement Transcript (LIT) and Self-Tracker attached to this document. 3. Complete and submit all requirements by early April in order to receive recognition at the Leadership Certificate Ceremony.
4 Summary of Requirements: Leadership & Involvement Transcript (LIT) The Leadership & Involvement Transcript allows you to document all of your leadership and involvement experience in one place! This is a great tool to help you remember all you do over the course of your collegiate career. Showcasing your experiences will help you distinguish yourself in job interviews, scholarships, and graduate school applications. As you complete requirements for the Residence Life Leadership Certificate, you will track them on your LIT. Leadership & Involvement Transcript Requirements: In order to receive your Residence Life Leadership Certificate, you will need to provide a PDF of all of your programs and involvement. To begin creating your LIT, please visit: leadership.arizona.edu/org/avenues/lit Dynamic Leadership Dynamic leaders are people who have an understanding of themselves and others. They are leaders who recognize the needs of today s society and address those issues with empathy, ethics, values, and sense of social responsibility. Using the principles included in the Social Change Model of Leadership (Komives, Lucas, & McMahon, 2007), you will be able to explore your individual values, group values, and citizenship. A. Individual Values You will: Improve your self-awareness (Consciousness of Self) Learn to act in accordance with your values (Congruence) Demonstrate commitment to values and purpose (Commitment) Possible Individual Values Programs: ATLAS Workshops (ex. Strengths Quest, Leadership Styles in Groups, Leadership and Values, etc.) Leadership training or conference with a focus on individual values B. Group Values You will: Value working with others towards a common goal (Collaboration) Develop and participate in a shared vision of a group (Common Purpose) Learn to work through conflict in a mature and thoughtful manner (Controversy with Civility)

Citizenship You will: See yourself as part of larger community (residence hall/ campus/ city/state/country/ globe) Possible Citizenship Programs: SafeZone Program Step Up Hunger Banquet Tunnel of Oppression Earth Hour Plan a program that brings awareness about a contemporary issue Dynamic Leadership Requirements Include: 1. Attend or coordinate a minimum of three programs (one from each sub category) 2. Demonstrate prolonged involvement in an extracurricular group or leadership employment that involves significant campus/community leadership Social Responsibility Socially responsible leaders are concerned with the ways in which their decisions and actions impact others and their communities. Social Responsibility You will: Seek out involvement in your communities Learn from others, self, and environment to develop informed perspectives on social issues Social Responsibility Requirements Include: 1. Pick a social issue that you are passionate about or want to learn more about (ex. Environmental sustainability, LGBTQ rights, racial justice, female empowerment, etc.) 2. Attend a minimum of one lecture, workshop or training related to the selected social issue 3. Participate in an active community service project related to the selected social issue (minimum three hours) 4. Complete a brief online reflection about what you have learned, observed, and experienced
6 Professional Skill Development Intentional skill building and application are essential to the on-going development of today s leaders. In this category, you will focus on tangible skill building and the application of your leadership skills with a focus on your future. Professional Skill Development You will: Be able to contextualize and represent newly acquired skills Expand on your experiences Be able to clearly communicate your leadership skills and experience to others Professional Skill Development Requirements Include: 1. Participate in two of the following options: a. Career center workshops such as a resume building or interviewing skills b. ATLAS workshops (ex. Managing Your Time Effectively, Protect your Webutation, Public Speaking Strategies, etc.) c. Lectures outside of class d. RHA training sessions 2. Create and provide an updated professional resume. Capstone Reflection Capstone You will: Contextualize the multitude of experiences you have participated in Reflect on your improved skills, community involvement, and future leadership directions Capstone Requirements Include: For the capstone, you will complete a short online reflection questionnaire about your leadership and involvement experiences, what skills you have learned and how you envision utilizing these skills in your future career/academic pursuits.
