1 Instructor: Bruce Hulse Office: 242 Marist Hall Telephone: LSC 740 Database Management Syllabus Description This course will provide a general introduction to database management, with an emphasis on database use in the library environment. The primary focus will be on database design concepts, though data retrieval and manipulation will also be covered. Course Description: SLIS Catalog: Solid introduction to the terminology, concepts and practice of information storage and retrieval systems design. Special emphasis on user needs assessments, data integrity, data models and record structure, and data manipulation. Other topics include: current awareness of relational database model, query languages, data normalization techniques, clientserver systems, database warehousing and data mining. Practice in developing a small database application. Course Objectives: 1. Establish familiarity with database design concepts. 2. Establish familiarity with the database design process. 3. Establish familiarity with the relational database model. 4. Establish familiarity with data retrieval and manipulation. 5. Establish familiarity with current database management practices in the library environment.
2 Course Design: Class time will be devoted to lecture, class discussion, and participatory exercises. Student participation will be stressed; students will participate in a group project as well as during class sessions. The textbook for the course will be: Hernandez, Michael J. Database Design for Mere Mortals: A Hands-On Guide to Relational Database Design. Boston, Addison- Wesley, 2003 ISBN-10: Supplemental readings will be available via the course's Blackboard page. Course Requirements: Grades will be based on assignments and examinations as follows: 1. Assignments (3 assignments this term): 5% each, 15% total 2. Midterm Exam 20% 3. Group projects----25% 4. Final Exam 25% 5. Class participation----15% Written assignments must be typed-double-spaced; use of word processing software to complete these assignments is highly recommended. Proper citation format and clear grammar are expected in written assignments. Assignments must be turned in by the due date. Late assignments will be penalized 5 points per day after the due date.
