Human Resource Management BA Hons Greenwich Campus gre.ac.uk/business
Why study this programme? Human resource management has been undergoing significant changes in recent years. The increased realisation that human resources are a vital organisational capability has given human resource management a critical role in organisational effectiveness. In order to achieve competitive advantage, organisations are increasingly looking at human resource management at operational and strategic levels. This specialist degree is of considerable benefit to anyone who is currently working, or expecting to work, in human resource management. Employers want graduates to have distinctive, relevant experience. Our Greenwich Employability Passport scheme is designed to recognise and reward extra-curricular activities such as part-time work, volunteering, society membership, or attending our special guest lectures, to help give you a competitive edge in the job market. Business and management studies at the University of Greenwich are rated highly in national surveys. Why study with us? The Business School is renowned for high standards of teaching. Our staff combine a wealth of international business knowledge and industry experience with a commitment to support the learning of every student. The Department of Human Resources & Organisational Behaviour is focused on developing a greater understanding of how work affects people s lives, and how people s behaviour at work affects an organisation s success. Our teaching staff have considerable professional experience in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors and are committed to improving our students employability as managers. Our teaching and research covers a range of disciplines, including organisational behaviour, human resource management, employee relations, training and development, business ethics, managing across cultures, communication skills, and career management training. We have long-standing links with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), including a close association with the local branch (CIPD
South East Thames). Our specialist Masters programme leads directly to CIPD membership. The Work & Employment Research Unit and the Leadership Organisational Behaviour research group provide active focus for our research activities. We frequently have papers published in respected academic journals, and members of our staff have achieved international acclaim and contribute to conferences all over the world. This expertise feeds back into our programmes and teaching. The Greenwich Campus is based on a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the banks of the River Thames. The university s largest campus, it is centred on three baroque buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren at the end of the 17th century. The surrounding town is a bustling mix of shops, restaurants and pubs, as well as some of the most famous tourist attractions in the country. The business districts of Canary Wharf and the City are a short journey away on the Docklands Light Railway. There are also direct rail links into central London. There are different things I really enjoy about my course. First of all this amazing mixture of business related courses and courses that refer to understanding the psychological nature of a person, it s kind of self awareness, developing of personal skills and on the other hand knowing how to run a business. Elizaveta Proselkova Human Resource Management BA Hons Student What will you study? Year 1 Introduction to Business Functions This course will equip you with an understanding of the interdependent nature of business organisations and the importance of cross-functional decision making in increasingly globalised and competitive markets. Personal and Professional Development 1: Study Skills and Self Evaluation This course arises from the recognition that alongside their academic studies, undergraduate students need to develop skills and competencies that enhance their future employability prospects. Employers increasingly look for graduates with good communication, self-management and problem-solving skills, as well as selfconfidence and the ability to learn effectively. Introduction to Human Resource Management (30 credits) This course introduces relevant concepts and theories in the field of HRM, and will provide you with the knowledge, understanding and key skills required to study specialist HR courses at Levels 5 and 6, and to undertake human resource management at a professional level. Context and Regulatory Framework of Business (30 credits) The aim of this course is to provide you with the ability to identify, examine and analyse the major contextual factors within which organisations operate. Such contextual factors include labour market developments, government policy, employment regulation and social and technological trends.
Management Skills 1: Managing the Individual and Team All organisations are a function of their people and the effectiveness of an organisation depends on how people are managed and guided. This course develops an understanding of the essential skills and abilities that are necessary to manage and lead people effectively for the benefit of the individual and the organisation. Organisation Behaviour 1: Managing the Performance of Individuals This course prepares you to be an effective member and manager of workplace teams. The taught phases will equip you with an understanding of the behavioural levers that managers can apply to improve the performance and job satisfaction of individuals. Year 2 Personal and Professional Development 2: Communication and Research Skills This course is a continuation of the Personal and Professional Development series, started in Level 1 and continuing into Level 3 of the degree programme. It develops those skills which employers tell us are most important to achieving success in modern organisations. Business Ethics This course widens the moral awareness of current and future business professionals by developing an understanding for ethics and applying it to a range of business dilemmas. An interdisciplinary approach based on philosophy, sociology and psychology is used to understand people, organisations and their moral responsibilities and rights. Cross-Cultural Management This course examines the management of culturally diverse organisations. Drawing from advanced research on the impact of national and sub-cultures on organisations, it explores the effects of cultural diversity on major organisational management processes. Employment Law The aim of this course is to give you an understanding within a wide knowledge base of the rights and responsibilities of workers and management within the workplace. It will provide you with the opportunity for in-depth analysis of major areas of employment law and is based on dialogue rather than passive receipt of wisdom. Employee Resourcing and Development (30 credits) This course examines two key activities of human resource management, which complement each other in their focus on the performance and skill needs of organisations and individuals. Management Skills 2: Managing Effectively This course will provide you with an understanding of the essential skills and abilities necessary to manage and lead people effectively for the benefit of the individual and teams. The taught phases put emphasis on what is needed to be an effective manager. Organisation Behaviour 2: Managing Groups and Teams This course will deepen your understanding of organisational behaviour by examining inter- and intra-group processes within organisations. Effective group management
is essential to organisational success and membership of supportive groups is also beneficial to individual wellbeing. The themes of ethics and wellbeing are developed throughout this course. Overseas Exchange Programme You can apply to participate in the European Union student exchange programme, Erasmus. This can provide a grant towards the cost of studying part of this degree in a European partner institution during your second year. Benefits of becoming an Erasmus student include: Employability you can demonstrate qualities that employers are looking for, such as an ability to take on and adapt to new challenges and environments New experiences you can have lots of fun, meet interesting people and gain new skills Increased language proficiency you can learn or master another language Maturity you can build your confidence and independence by managing life in a different culture. Optional Sandwich Year You can undertake a work placement in your third year. This will help you further increase your career prospects and earning potential by giving you practical experience and industry insight. The Business School Employability Office can help you find suitable placement opportunities as well as giving practical advice on writing CVs and preparing you for assessment centres and interviews. In previous years, our students have undertaken their work placements in companies such as TNS Dubai, Carphone Warehouse Support Centre, Camden & Islington NHS Trust.
Final Year Personal and Professional Development 3: Career Development This course encourages you to take responsibility for managing your own career and to approach your education beside current and future employment in the spirit of lifelong learning and continuing professional development. Dissertation (30 credits) The dissertation is a key element of the degree. It is the point where knowledge and understanding acquired through the earlier taught courses is synthesised and applied to a substantial management problem. Managing in the strategic context This course introduces strategic management in conceptual and practical ways, involving discussion and use of a range of different case studies. You will learn how this integrates with the functional areas of marketing, operations, finance and human resources. Contemporary Issues in HRM The main aims of this course are to give you a critical understanding of the challenges that face practicing people management professionals in the complex contemporary operating environment. It will help you to develop a set of acute critical thinking faculties that will equip you for the challenges presented in the contemporary organisational milieu. Employee Relations and Rewards (30 credits) This course covers two major and linked areas of human resource management policy and practice - employee relations and employee reward. The aims of this course are to develop your knowledge, understanding and professional competence in the field of employee relations and reward management. Organisation Behaviour 3: Leadership You will emerge from this course having discovered a model of leadership behaviour that works for you, either as a leader or one of the led. You will be encouraged to explore your credibility as a leader or potential leader. Career opportunities Graduates from this programme can find employment in training and development, personnel/human resource management, employee and industrial relations and general management. Past students have obtained jobs in all sectors of business, including companies that are household names. Teaching and assessment This programme is taught by a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, case studies and presentations and has a strong commercial orientation. You will be assessed through assignments, examinations and presentations. Courses are taught by lecturers with strong industrial and commercial experience, as well as excellent academic credentials.
