1 Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Course Sequence Options APPLICATION AND ADMISSION PROCEDURES Updated 7/27/15 Overview This course sequence trains practitioners extensively in Applied Behavior Analysis, with a focus on treating Autism. Recent Michigan legislation mandates insurance companies to cover therapeutic services for autistic persons by BCBA credentialed treatment providers. To earn a BCBA credential, a master s degree in psychology, education or Applied Behavior Analysis is required, plus a specific sequence of 5 classes (18 credits) plus a practicum (described below). Our course sequence has received full approval by the Behavior Analytic Certification Board (BACB). This BCBA certification course sequence can either be part of a master s program or a post master s set of courses that will meet the requirements for students to sit for the BCBA exam. Students who successfully complete the courses are eligible to sit for the BCBA examination, which, upon passing, would lead to the BCBA credential. Note to those entering with a master s degree: The BACB has limited only those degrees from psychology, education, and applied behavior analysis as eligible for the course sequence. They are still eligible to enroll in our full M.Ed. program described below, but the course sequence option without the M.Ed. program is no longer available outside of those degrees. This is a BACB decision not at all a WSU decision. There are two options for the field/practicum experience that is also required for students seeking to sit for the BCBA exam: Option (a) involves 750 hours of time and students will enroll in a total of 6 credits of field/practicum experience across the final three courses of the sequence (after the initial two courses) 2 field experience credit hours per course. This is considered an accelerated practicum and is conducted at the University Pediatrician's Autism Center in Novi, Detroit, or in Clinton Township. Students will complete associated tasks and practicum activities by being immersed into a center-based practicum site and being assigned a direct center-based supervisor. This is a competitive option, and students will have to apply for it at the end of the first course in the BCBA course sequence. Not all will be accepted admission is based on space. Option (b) involves 1500 hours of time at a location to be secured by the student, and for which no university credits are involved but the student pays for or makes other arrangements for supervision. This option is typically chosen by those who are already working in the field and have a natural setting in which to conduct the required activities. Applicants will be asked which option they plan to select. Applicants must choose whether or not they are going to take a) the course sequence as a series of 18 credits earning a Graduate Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis (prior master s degree in psychology, education, or applied behavior analysis required) plus one of the practicum options, or b) as part of a Master s of Education (M.Ed.) degree in Educational Psychology, which involves the same 18 credit sequence, plus an additional 12 credits of coursework (Bachelor s degree required), plus one of the practicum options. Both options lead to the BCBA credential, providing the BCBA exam is passed after completing the ABA/BCBA course 1
2 sequence. Regardless of whether route a or b is chosen, the ABA/BCBA five-course sequence is taken at the same time by all students admitted at the same time as a cohort. Cohorts must take their classes in sequence together as outlined by the program it is a block scheduled program with no variations permitted. The course scheduling plan will vary by cohort. See the end of this document for current course scheduling plans. See the section at the end of this document delineating the courses that are part of the sequence and/or M.Ed. The M.Ed. route described above is already in place and will involve 30 credits, exclusive of practicum. Admission Deadlines New cohorts begin each fall pending enrollment. The next BCBA cohort course is tentatively scheduled to start Fall Applications for this cohort need to be in by April 1st Admission Procedures Admission to either option requires a University Graduate Admissions application (submitted online to Graduate Admissions either an Educational Psychology M.Ed. application or an Applied Behavior Analysis Graduate Certificate application), a program area application, statement of purpose essay, official transcripts, and three letters of recommendation (each described in detail below). All of this information is used comprehensively to evaluate a student s potential candidacy for the programs. A limited number of qualified applicants are invited for an interview with the faculty. Approximately 20 students will be accepted into the next cohort. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the program secretary at (313) if clarification is needed and to check on the status of applications. Prerequisites Applicants are expected to meet the minimum undergraduate 2.75 GPA requirement outlined by the WSU Graduate School. Financial Aid Both the M.Ed. program route and the Graduate Certificate in ABA route are financial aid eligible. 2
3 Graduate Application Go to and submit a graduate application to Graduate Admissions. Apply online only. Their office is located in the Welcome Center, 4 th Floor, 42 W. Warren, Detroit, MI 48202, (313) On the application form in the planned course of study section, you would specify either Education Psychology M.Ed. (for those students without a Master s Degree who will be entering our M.Ed. Program) or Applied Behavior Analysis Graduate Certificate (for those students who already have a Master s Degree and will be just taking the coursework and internship(s)). You are encouraged to contact the program secretary at (313) to ensure you have applied correctly and to have any concerns addressed. Official Transcripts Official transcripts are required to be sent directly from all previously attended universities to Graduate Admissions with your graduate application. Official transcripts are required to be sent directly from all previous universities to Wayne State University Office of Graduate Admissions at 5057 Woodward, Suite 6000, Detroit, MI [phone: (313) ]. Electronic transcripts will be accepted if they are delivered securely from the registrar of the issuing institution directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions - [email protected]. Program Application The Program Application is a different application than the Graduate Admission Application that is submitted online directly to Graduate Admissions. The Program Application can be found further in this brochure and is specific to our department. You can type or handwrite it, but it needs to be uploaded with your online application. Recommendations Three letters of recommendation are required. There are no specific forms required for these letters. The letters should consist of why you would be a good candidate for the program and any other pertinent information about your background and your strengths. We recommend that at least one or two of the letters be from faculty members. The letters should be uploaded with your online application. Interviews Once you have applied online, the next step is to schedule an interview with Ms. Krista Clancy. Her contact information is: Krista Clancy, MS., LLP, BCBA Director of Behavioral Services University Pediatricians Autism Center BCBA Course Sequence Advisor Wayne State University [email protected] 3
4 The interview will take place at University Pediatrician's Autism Center at one of our three locations; Novi, Detroit, or Clinton Township. Contact Krista Clancy at if you would like to schedule an interview. You would send her whatever materials she feels are necessary for her to determine if you would be a fit for the program and therefore whether or not to be interviewed. If approved after the interview, your application materials will be reviewed by faculty for an admission decision. You will be notified by of the outcome. Application materials to be uploaded with your online application: q Official Transcripts q Program Area Application q Letters of Recommendation (3) q Letter of Intent/Essay (no requirements but it should indicate why you chose this professional area) If you have any questions about our program and/or the application process, as well as to check in to see if all of your application materials have been received by the deadline, please contact the program secretary at (313) or [email protected]. 4
