1 Go to or to QACHS web page, click on Academics, click on Guidance, and click on Naviance How to Apply to College Using Naviance/Family Connection 1. Enter the colleges you are applying to under the Colleges I m Applying To tab by clicking on the add to this list look up your college and add it to your list. 2. Once you have applied to the college, a. Click on the pencil to open the file b. Click on the Application submitted button to show that you have applied c. If it gives you the option to apply using the Common Application click on yes (even if you are not using the Common App, it allows your teachers and counselor to send forms electronically) However, if the colleges accept the Common Application, you should use it!!! You only have to fill out one Application and can send it to any of the schools on the participating list! 3. If the college does not accept the Common Application you can click onto their web site from Naviance to do your on-line Application. How to Apply Using the Common Application 1. Log on to 2. Create a user name and password 3. Follow directions on the Common App website 4. Write down your Common Application log in information 5. Log on Naviance/Family Connection 6. Click on the Colleges tab and click on Colleges I m Applying To 7. Fill out the large blue box at the top YOU ARE PROVIDING PERMISSION TO SEND THE COLLEGES YOUR APPLICATION INFORMATION FROM QACHS a. Make sure you enter the username and password that you used to sign up with on the Common App website. b. On line Common App and the Naviance Common App username and password must match. How to request a teacher letter of recommendation 1. Click on Colleges tab and Colleges I m Applying To 2. All the way at the bottom of that page you will find Teacher Recommendation add or remove 3. Click on the teacher name and write them a short message asking them if they would write a letter of recommendation for you and download it to Naviance 4. Click on Document Library on Naviance/Family Connection home page 5. Click on Teacher Recommendation Worksheet complete one for each teacher you are asking 6. See teacher in person to ask if they would do a letter of recommendation. a. Advise them that you have sent a request to them via Naviance . b. If they agree, give them a recommendation worksheet. c. Advise them to download teacher letter on Naviance and advise them if they need to do Common Application Teacher Form (if so they can do on Naviance) d. 2 BUILDING A RESUME Your resume is extremely important. Your guidance counselor will use the information you provide in your resume to write a recommendation letter. The more information provided the better the recommendation letter. You may also send your resume along with your college application. Your resume may also be submitted along with scholarship applications. It is extremely important to build a resume and include as much information about yourself as possible. Below are the steps on building a resume in Naviance. 1. Go to About Me tab on Family Connection 2. Click on Resume 3. Select a heading under Add a new entry for any area you have information to include. a. Work Experience include all jobs you have held since 9 th grade and how long you worked there. b. Volunteer Service Make sure you list everything you have done since 9 th grade list them individually not just one blanket statement. (Example Member of Good Faith Youth Group/Not enough information) Good example might be Volunteer at Animal Resource Foundation 15 hours each week for the past 3 years. It s ok to list activities that you started prior to the 9 th grade and have continued into HS. c. Extra Curricular Include all clubs or organizations you belong to such as the Drama Club, Photography Club or Student Government. d. Awards Include any awards you have received since 9 th grade such as 1 st Team Bayside Conference, scouting awards, etc e. Athletic Achievement include all sports teams you have been involved with since the 9 th grade such as Junior Varsity Soccer or Varsity Cheerleading. f. Leadership include all leadership roles you have had or been recognized since 9 th grade such as Team Captain, Club President, Eagle Scout, Church Youth Group, etc. 4. After selecting a section just fill in the information and click :Add to Resume > 5. Each section includes tips on what to include as well as examples. 6. Continue to fill in each section until you have entered all pertinent information. 7. Be sure to include everything you have done since 9 th grade. 8. Once all the information is entered, select Customize your printable resumes 9. Select Create a new print format 10. Give your resume a name to be saved under 11. Select one of the two styles available 12. Click on the boxes you would like to appear on your resume 13. Select save and close 14. At the top you will see your saved resume formatted and ready to print. You can save your resume under the About Me tab in Journal for your counselor to use. [Type text] Page 2

3 COLLEGE APPLICATION CHECKLIST Please complete the following checklist with EACH college application you complete!! 1. Enter colleges that you are applying to on Naviance (Colleges) 2. If you are applying to schools using the Common Application, go to to register 3. If using the Common App, complete the Privacy Notice for Common Application on Naviance (blue box under Colleges) 4. Complete Resume on Naviance 5. Complete college applications online 6. Complete Teacher Recommendation Worksheet for each teacher (Documents) 7. Request Teacher Letter of recommendations on Naviance 8. Personally visit each teacher to request Letter of Recommendation 9. Complete Transcript Release Form and return to Guidance 10. Request transcripts on Naviance 11. Pay transcript fee in Guidance ($1 each) 12. Complete College Application Cover Sheet and or bring to your Guidance Counselor [Type text] Page 3
