What is this course about? 1.1 Course description In Strategic Management Accounting you will learn to use a range of analytic tools for costing, decisionmaking, planning and control and consider their applicability within the context of strategic management. You will work in a team to use a computer spreadsheet application (MS Excel) to provide quantitative data to support strategic decision making. 1.2 Course content The role of accounting information in management decision making Workflow and Process Analysis Project management and cross-functional teams Measuring and reporting sustainability An introduction to cost terms and inventory costing Product and service costing Determining how costs behave Activity-based costing and activity-based management Pricing decisions and customer-profitability analysis Flexible budgets, direct-cost variances and management control Strategy, balanced scorecard and strategic profitability analysis Making presentations 2. Product: Exam Format: This is an individual assessment. The mid-semester examination is an unseen, closed book, one-hour examination, comprising both theoretical and practical questions. The material covered in the examination will be drawn from topics 1-3. Criteria Correctly applying relevant techniques to practical questions. 4 Page 4 Assessment Task 2a, 2b and 2c: Excel spreadsheet budget project project plan, spreadsheet and presentation Goal: Product: Format: Criteria You will develop collaboration skills through the production of a strategic management project using Microsoft Excel. Spreadsheet budget report which includes a Project Plan, Spreadsheet and an Oral Presentation. In teams of three (3), you will plan and organise the preparation of a spreadsheet budget and memo. Details of the assignment will be made available to you in the first lecture. PART A Project plan (6 percent) The project plan should identify the major tasks involved in completing the report, the resources available (ie individuals and their strengths), assign responsibility for tasks to specific team members, and identify anticipated completion dates (to be completed using MS Project). PART B Spreadsheet (15 percent) Design a spreadsheet template to analyse the profitability of the organisation and the impact of your recommendations. PART C Presentation (9 percent) You will present your recommendations. In doing so you should draw attention to the relevant aspects of your spreadsheet model and demonstrate how it supports decision making. Each team member is to present for a maximum of three (3) minutes each. The presentations will be marked individually. Product: Exam Format: The final examination is an unseen, closed book, two-hour examination, comprising both theoretical and practical questions in an extended answer format. Criteria This is an individual assessment. Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Problem solving Applying technologies 5.3 Additional assessment requirements SafeAssign In order to minimise incidents of plagiarism and collusion, this course may require that some of its assessment tasks are submitted electronically via SafeAssign. This software allows for text comparisons to be made between your submitted assessment item and all other work that SafeAssign has access to. If required, details of how to submit via SafeAssign will be provided on the site of the course.
5 Page 5 Eligibility for Supplementary Assessment Your eligibility for supplementary assessment in a course is dependent of the following conditions applying: a) The final mark is in the percentage range 47% to 49.4% b) The course is graded using the Standard Grading scale c) You have not failed an assessment task in the course due to academic misconduct 5.4 Submission penalties Late submission of assessment tasks will be penalised at the following maximum rate: 5% (of the assessment task s identified value) per day for the first two days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. 10% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the third day 20% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the fourth day and subsequent days up to and including seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. A result of zero is awarded for an assessment task submitted after seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. Weekdays and weekends are included in the calculation of days late. To request an extension you must contact your course coordinator to negotiate an outcome. 6.
