1 Setting up Remote Desktop Terminology: Host PC the computer you want to access remotely; the destination Client PC the computer you are actually using to access another PC; the source IP Address the numerical address of your host PC. For example, Domain name the alphanumeric address of your host PC. For example, pc-1a.louisville.edu Local user account the user account residing on your desktop work PC only. Network user account your ULink UserID that is used to access network resources like Information needed before we start: Before we begin, you must know the domain name of the PC you want to access remotely (the host PC). To find the domain name, follow the steps below. 1.1 For Windows7, Click on Start, then right-click on Computer and choose Properties. For Windows 8 simply right click on the start button and click System. The red outlined area shows the domain name of your host PC. This name will not be the same as the example shown above, but will be similar. Write this down and remember it.

2 2. Enabling Remote Desktop on the Host PC Remote desktop is disabled by default on all computers and will have to be enabled. The instructions in this section were made using Windows 7. For this section, you will be using the same PC you used in the domain name section above (the host PC). 2.1 For Windows 7, Click on Start, then right click on Computer and choose Properties. For Windows 8 simply right click on the start button and click System. Windows 8 Windows 7

3 2.2 In the resulting window, click on Remote settings located in the upper left hand corner.

4 2.3 In the Remote settings tab, check the option to Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure), then click OK to finish the setup. 3. Identify your local user account Your local user account and password is the same as your ULink UserID. Remember your local user account and password. You will need this information in the next step. 4. How to connect to Remote Desktop enabled PC This section shows you how to connect to the host PC from another computer (called client PC), such as your home computer or laptop.

5 Before connecting to your work PC on campus, you must first connect to the university VPN using your ULink userid and password. If you have not downloaded the VPN agent, the page is here: The following procedure describes how to use the VPN agent. If you are not connected to GlobalProtect, connect now. You can tell if you are connected by hovering over the GlobalProtect icon in the system tray. a. Expand the system tray, right-click the GlobalProtect icon, and select the following option: Connect Select this option to connect to the University of Louisville GlobalProtect. The agent will automatically select which gateway to connect to, depending on the configuration the administrator defined and the response times of the available gateways. b. If prompted, enter your User Name, Password, and vpn.louisville.edu for the Portal then click Apply. As soon as the agent successfully connects, the GlobalProtect icon changes to a globe with a shield. When you hover over the icon it shows the status Connected. The entire VPN connection guide is found here: Global-Protect User Guide. ***If you do not connect to the VPN, the instructions below will not work*** 4.1 From your client PC, launch the Remote Desktop application by going to Start and then search for Remote Desktop Connection Windows 8 Windows 7

6 4.2 In the Remote Desktop Application Window, enter the domain name of the PC you would like to connect to. The domain name is the address you found in step Click Connect and you ll be prompted to input your username and/or password as seen below. Input your username and/or password you identified in section three of this document, then click Connect to continue. If you provided the correct credentials, your Remote Desktop Session should have started as seen below.
