Universal Simple Control, USC-1 Data and Event Logging with the USB Flash Drive DATA-PAK The USC-1 universal simple voltage regulator control uses a flash drive to store data. Then a propriety Data and Event Logging Program can be used to view, analyze, and download this data to either a PDF or Excel file. This is done with a removable USB Flash Drive DATA-PAK memory stick. The Data and Event Logging Program can be loaded from the USC-1 Utility Suite by double clicking the desk top icon (see left). If the USC-1 Utility Suite icon is not visible on the desk top or in the start -> All Programs -> USC-1 Utility Suite, then re- install the software that came with the control. If running Windows XP with the ICMI provided USB Flash Drive DATA-PAK, the program is the first item in the Auto Play list of Windows Explorer. If the Auto Play is not enabled or installed, then use Windows Explorer and navigate to the USB hard drive. In the root of the USB Hard drive, double click on DataEventLog.exe program. Visit our website at www. ICMIinc.com ICMI

The USC-1 Utility Suite window (see below) contains the following: Configuration Utility: This program configures the control settings via a Windows based program. It may be easier to use than the front panel control interface done by hand. Firmware Loader: This program upgrades the control with new software. Data/Event Log: This program displays the Flash Drive DATA-PAK data that was recorded on the removable USB drive. Documents: Manuals in pdf format needed to operate the control. This UTILITY SUITE documentation will focus on the Data and Event Logging program. Click on the Data/Event Log button to start the Data and Event Logging Program. The main screen should then look like this window (see below). Visit our website at www. ICMIinc.com ICMI

The directory navigation is on the left side. If the USB drive has not yet been inserted in the computer, please do so now. After inserting the USB drive, the Refresh button changes its title (see left). It may be necessary to click several times (depending on the speed of the computer and the hard drive) before the directory list shows the updated drive. Double click on the USB drive so that the subfolder USC1DATA is listed. Open the folder. The folder that is listed contains the control number. If the USB hard drive has been in multiple controls, there will be several folders containing control numbers. Open the folder with the control number that is to be viewed. When opening this folder, subfolders are displayed containing twelve additional folders, each with the name of a month. Each month contains data logging information if data was collected during that month. Visit our website at www. ICMIinc.com ICMI

View the data by double clicking on the month s folder. In this folder (see below left) two files are displayed. The two files that can be displayed in the file list box are the event files, represented by EVNT.DPK and the data logging file, represented by TIME.DPK. If the control is set up with only event logging, the TIME.DPK file will not appear. Likewise, if the control is set up with only data logging, the event file is not shown. By double clicking on the event file, the event display program is loaded. Likewise, by double clicking on the time file, the combination of event and data logging is loaded. There is another section of the software which displays the data logging only. By clicking on either the event or time file, one or more buttons becomes activated. If both files exist in the same directory, the user has two options. If the event file is clicked, the user can either go to the event display program or the combination of event and data logging. If the time file is selected, the Data Logging Only and Events with Data Logging buttons are enabled. The Data Logging Only button loads the data logging program where the time data are displayed. Events Logging This section of the software is accessed by just click on the Event button and the Events logging program is displayed which consist of: The actual event in a spreadsheet format The filters for displaying events Graph showing the frequency of the events The Statistics of frequency of events listing File Exporting Visit our website at www. ICMIinc.com ICMI

Spread Sheet Format There are ten different columns in the spreadsheet: 1. The time the event occurs 2. Event trigger 3. Load Center Volts (V) 4. Load Volts (V) 5. Load Amps (ma) 6. Phase Angle 7. Frequency (Hz) 8. Tap position 9. Operation count 10. Motor Current Data Filtering This section is located on the top right hand corner of the program. The purpose of this section is to eliminate certain events from the spreadsheet view and from the graph view, or if the user wants to view a specific event, it is much easier when all the other events are eliminated from the spreadsheet. By clicking on the Clear All button, and the events are cleared out and the spreadsheet and graph will look empty. By clicking on the Check All button, all event data available will be reloaded. Note, if a certain event has not occurred in the time period of event collections, it will not show up in the spreadsheet and graph regardless if the event is check marked or not. Visit our website at www. ICMIinc.com ICMI

Two graph types can change the items check marked. For additional details see Tap Position and Motor Current in the graph section. Graph Section There are four different graph types that can be displayed. Each graph can be selected using the chart setting group box. The Event Triggers does have an effect on how the graph appears except for the Tap Position and the motor Current graph. Day Range Graph The Chart Setting Day Range is a graph of number of occurrences of the triggered events. A typical graph is shown below. At the top of the graph, the beginning and ending dates are displayed. By changing the beginning and ending dates, shown below the Chart Setting, and clicking on the Draw button, the graph displays the number of events for these days. The Reset : button generates the graph for all available events. As described in the Data Filtering section, by changing the check mark of the event triggers, the graph changes accordingly. Note: if certain events do not register, they are still displayed in the graph as a zero event, as long as the event trigger is check marked. By un-checking the trigger event, the graph will not display them. Visit our website at www. ICMIinc.com ICMI

Tap Position The second type of graph is the Tap Position Operation count, shown 16 to +16. This graph shows for each tap position and how many times the tapping occurred. If the tap position event trigger is un checked, the program automatically check marks the event trigger. This Tap Operation graph is useful to display the tap frequency of each of the contacts. Per Day Chart The Per Day graph display the frequency of occurrences each day. If a lot of events took place during the month, this chart might appear to be cluttered. There are 28 to 31 days with 11 different type of events which means that maximum 341 bars appears on the screen. Visit our website at www. ICMIinc.com ICMI

Therefore, the event trigger check marks helps eliminate events that are of no interest. The purpose of this graph is to see each event or group of events for each single day. For instance if an high occurrence of tap changes occurred on a certain day of the week, this graph will be able to show that. Motor Current This graph shows the motor current for the tap position. For all other events, the motor current is not shown. When the user clicks on the motor current selection, then all event triggers cleared except for the tap position. Visit our website at www. ICMIinc.com ICMI

It is possible that many tap changes occur. If more than 25 tap changes occur, a scroll bar at the bottom of the graph appears, and the user can scroll to view the data. A cursor line is shown in the graph, by either scrolling or by using the spreadsheet, the cursor is positioned accordingly. By clicking on a tap position event in the spreadsheet, the cursor line moves to the operation count position accordingly. Statistic Listing The total number of each triggered event is listed in the box on the lower right hand corner of the program. In the Data Filtering section, the checking or un checking of the event triggers has no effect on this section. Whenever a event trigger is filtered out of the graph, the statistics listing remains the same but with a message that the event is not in graph. File Exporting The DPK files are text files and if they are small enough the user can load them in an excel sheet directly from windows explorer. However, there are instances where there are too many events so that excel cannot load this data. This is more true for data logging than for event logging. This program contains an export utility to excel even for very large files. For very large files, the data is displayed in different column to accommodate for the max lines in excel. In the file menu, there are three ways to save data in a special way. The first is to save the chart as a jpeg or bitmap file. The second is to export the data and graphs to a PDF file. ( To view the file you need the Adobe Reader.) The third way is export the data and certain graphs to Excel. Save Chart as jpeg or Bitmap The first step is to select the type of graph to be saved. Next, click on File and select the Save Chart as item. Type in the file name and then click on save. If you do not select an extension or type in the file extension, a jpeg file is assumed as default. Visit our website at www. ICMIinc.com ICMI

The default directory where the graph is being saved as a picture is in the month for which the data is loaded. The user can navigate to any different directory. Exporting to PDF There are three different settings for which the data can be saved. The first is the All to PDF File. This saves all the four graph types, the statistics and the data. When clicking on this menu item, a similar save as dialog box appears as shown in the above figure, with the exception, the file extension is PDF. After clicking on save, the PDF reader is loaded and the file is displayed. If the active graph is motor current, then all other event trigger are excluded in the spreadsheet. This effect the other graphs. For best performance graph, please select the Per Day or Day Range items in the chart selection. The Chart to PDF menu item saves the current chart to the PDF file. The Event Data to PDF saves only the event data to the PDF file. Visit our website at www. ICMIinc.com ICMI

Exporting to Excel The Export to Excel menu item loads up the excel program. Four sheets are created. The first sheet is the data as shown in the spreadsheet section of the program. Next is the Events Stats tab containing a graph similar to the Day Range selection in the program. The third tab is the Tap Position which is the same graph as the Tap Position in the program. The last tab contains the data used to create the two graphs. Visit our website at www. ICMIinc.com ICMI

Event-Data Logging Combination The Event-Data Logging Combination contains the data logging and the event logging. This part of the program, enables the user to view the data just before and after a specific event. The control is capable of collecting data every 5 seconds. This means that for a 31 day month, a total of 535,680 data points are collected. The results is that the data logging file (TIME.DPK) can be very large and the user would be unable to directly load the data into excel program. The other results is, that USB drives are a bit slow, and it might take a long time before the data is loaded. Once the file is loaded, the computer should run reasonable fast. The resulting page should look similar to the window below. Visit our website at www. ICMIinc.com ICMI

Events The upper left side contains all the events in a spreadsheet format. By selecting a row of the events, the graph will display the data logging around that event. Note, data logging occurs every 5 seconds (or what ever time interval the control was set up), the events are trigger, and are most likely between two data collection. Therefore, there is always a slight mismatch between the data logging and event logging. A special time frame before and after an event can be set by clicking on Graph, then selecting on Time Frame around Event, and then selecting the time from the sub menu. The cursor line is the position of the data logging that is closest to the event. This tool is handy to view the leading to an event and the effects after the event. Above the spreadsheet containing the event logging, there are two buttons. The right buttons enlarge the view of the spreadsheet, and the left button makes it the original size. By moving the mouse to the edge of the spreadsheet, the mouse cursor changes to the split screen cursor. When this occurs, the spreadsheet width can be changed by holding down the left mouse button and moving the mouse to the left or right. There is a minimum width for the spreadsheet. The Event Logging item in the menu has two items: Filter Settings and Statistics. The Statistics loads the program with all the events as described in the Events Logging Section. The Filter Settings item is similar to that of the Data Filtering section. By clicking on the Filter Settings, the Events Preferences setting dialog box appear. By clicking on the events triggers items, one can select which events to list in the spreadsheet. At least one item needs to be checked. Note: The selection of Events Triggers only changes the Visit our website at www. ICMIinc.com ICMI

items in the spreadsheet, but not in the graph. Max Min The Max and Min values are located in the middle of the left hand column. The Max and Min values are obtained from the data logging time file. Only the motor current max and min values are obtained from the Event logging file. Each item in the Max Min spreadsheet has an exact location in the graph with the exception of the motor current. By clicking on a row in the spreadsheet, the graph automatically changes and the graph line cursor is placed at the location of the maximum or minimum. When clicking on a row of the max min sheet, the program automatically finds the nearest event trigger that occurred at the max or min time stamp regardless if it is a meaningful or not. There are two types of max min collections. One is for all data available, and one for each day. When the software program loads up, the standard is the month max min. By clicking on Max Min menu item and selecting the Per Day the spreadsheet, it shows the max and min values per day. The first column shows the day number while the last column shows the actually time stamp it self. Filtering Data For a month of 31 days, with every 5 seconds a data collection taking place, the amount of data is 535,680 lines. It is possible to reduce the amount of data by using time filters. This can be done by selecting Graph from the menu bar and select Filter Data, a sub menu appears from which data filtering can be selected. The first item is the 5 seconds interval which is the maximum possible data to be displayed. The other items filter out data. For instance, if the control is set up to collect every 5 second, and the user select the 1 minute interval, then all data taken between the first data point and a minute later will be ignored. In the lower left hand corner, the statistics of how many lines there are in the data logging file, how many in the chart, and how many events are displayed.. Visit our website at www. ICMIinc.com ICMI

Changing the Filter data interval to a value larger than the control is set for, significantly reduces the number of data points in the graph. This can even affect the Time Frame around the Event, so that only one or two data points are shown. Charts Features By double clicking on the graph, the graph size becomes a full screen. All the other graphs are hidden underneath. The spreadsheets are still shown and can be operated as described above. The Load Center Volts and Load Volts are displayed on the same graph. For most of the data, these two will be exactly the same and overlap each other. By clicking on the check mark on the top of the graph, the user can select which graph is displayed. The Phase Angle chart can be changed into a Power Factor chart by clicking on the graph. The scroll bar of each graph is synchronized so that when one scroll bar is moved, each graph moves accordingly. The graphs can be set in Auto Scrolling mode by selecting the Auto Scroll item in the menu at the top of the program. The scrolling speed rate can be set using the Scroll Rate item in the menu. the feature is usable. All data can be shown so that the function of the scroll bar is no longer needed. This can be done by selecting Graph and then Show all Data. The Show All Data item can cause the computer to slow down significantly during the process of generating this graph. If only a few data points are collected, File Menu The File Menu options are similar to those in the Event Logging Section. Visit our website at www. ICMIinc.com ICMI

Data Logging Only This section of the program displays only the data logging. Instead of 6 separate charts, this has only one chart. Each of the seven items are displayed above each other. The number of items in the graph can be set by clicking on Graph in the menu bar, and then selecting Graph Items From the Graph Item Settings box, the user can select which items to plot on the graph. By clicking ok, the user returns to the graph and the graph updates itself. Visit our website at www. ICMIinc.com ICMI

The Graph Interval menu item is similar to that of the Event-Data Logging with the exception that this interval is the time frame of the horizontal axis. At the bottom of the graph, there is the starting date and ending date for which the graph can be set. By clicking on draw, the program might take a while to plot all the data. Remember, there could be more then a half million points to be plotted. The section at the lower right hand corner contains the data at the cursor line in the graph. If the user has selected only a few items to be plotted in the graph, the data of the hidden graphs at the cursor lines are still shown in this section.
