Configuring WPA2 for Windows XP

1 Configuring WPA2 for Windows XP Requirements for wireless using WPA2 on Windows XP with Service Pack 2 Your wireless card must support 802.1x, AES, and WPA2. Windows XP with service pack 2, it is recommended to install all the latest updates (you can download them through the Windows update site ). Make sure you have the most current drivers for your wireless card. **Important first step: Windows XP users with service pack 2 must install a Microsoft update to enable WPA2 support before continuing. You will need to restart your computer after downloading and installing the update. The update can be downloaded at ********************************************************************************************************************* Windows XP users with Service Pack 3 installed may continue with their configuration. Service Pack 3 has WPA2 support by default. ******************************************************************************************************************** Service Pack 2 users, after installing the update and rebooting, you are then ready to resume the WPA2 configuration. At the start menu - - select Run and type in ncpa.cpl and click ok. This will take you to the network connection screen (Figure 10)

2 Fig. 10 Right mouse click your wireless connection and verify your wireless card is enabled. If it isn t enabled then select enable. Once your wireless connection is enabled, select properties. This will bring up the following screen (figure 11). Click on the Wireless Networks tab. Make sure the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings is checked.. Fig. 11

3 Click the Add button and at the association tab fill out the window as below. The network authentication is WPA2 and the Data Encryption is AES. Securewireless ******** If WPA2 is not listed as an option, then one of the following is the likely cause: ******** You haven t installed the update from Microsoft as directed above (for Service Pack 2 users). The driver for your wireless adapter does not support WPA2. Check with the manufacturer to see if there is an updated version of the driver available. Your wireless adapter does not support WPA2.

4 Click the Authentication tab and fill out as in figure 13. The EAP type is Protected EAP (PEAP) and make sure the Authenticate as computer when computer information is available is UNCHECKED. Fig. 13 Click the Properties button and uncheck the Validate server certificate option and make sure that the authentication method is Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) as in figure 14.

5 Fig. 14 Click the Configure button and uncheck the box (see Figure 15). This will ensure that the proper login information is used. Fig. 15

6 Click Ok on each window until you get back to the original properties screen. There is a box labeled Advanced. Click to open it up. Select the choice, Access point (infrastructure) networks only, and uncheck the option of automatically connection to non-preferred networks (Figure 16) Fig. 16 Click Close and then OK. Congratulations, wireless using WPA2 is now set up. If you are within range of an access point, you will see the following image (With the name of your wireless connection) (figure 17) Securewireless Fig. 17 Click the text balloon and it will take you to the following window (figure 18):

7 Fig. 18 Enter your 6+2 username and password in the appropriate blanks, (this is the same as your Central Login username and password) but leave the logon domain empty. Click OK and you will be authenticated onto the wireless network using WPA2.

8 Configuring WPA2 for Vista Requirements for wireless using WPA2 on Windows Vista Your wireless card must support 802.1x, AES, and WPA2. Select Start then Control Panel on your Vista desktop. After the Control Panel window opens, doubleclick Network and Sharing Center Fig. 19

10 Fig. 21 You will then add a new wireless network to your machine. After selecting Add, a new window will appear as in Fig. 22 below.

11 Fig.22 Select Manually create a network profile A new window will appear (fig.23): Enter Securewireless for the network name. For the Security type, select WPA2-Enterprise from the drop down selection. The Encryption type will automatically populate with AES as in Fig. 23.

12 Fig. 23 Click the next button; A new window appears, click the close button. You should now see a screen similar to figure 24. With Securewireless listed as one of the networks you can view and modify.

14 Right-click on Securewireless, then select Properties Fig. 25

15 In the pop-up window, verify that Connect automatically when this network is in range is the only box selected in this window. Fig. 26

16 Select the Security Tab Security Type should be WPA2-Enterprise Encryption type should be AES Network authentication method should be PEAP The Cache user information checkbox should be unchecked. Fig. 27 Select the Settings button, the following window will appear (fig.28). Uncheck the Validate server certificate box and verify that Enable fast reconnect box is checked.

19 Click Ok on each window until you get back to the Manage wireless networks window (fig.30) Fig. 30 If you are within range of an access point, you will see the text balloon (Additional information is required to connect to Securewireless). Click on the text balloon and a window will appear as in fig.31

21 Configuring WPA2 for the Macintosh To setup your AirPort or Airport Extreme for use with WPA2. 1. In the menu bar, click on the AirPort icon and choose Open Internet Connect In the menu, select AirPort under Configuration. Next click on Turn AirPort On 3. Under Network, choose Other 4. Enter Securewireless and select WPA2 Enterprise. Enter username (6+2) and password (this is the same as your Central Login username and password). Click on OK to proceed.

22 5. If your connection is successful, your AirPort icon in the menu bar will become bold and show the signal strength (based on how many bars are bold like this ). Once you have configured this, your computer should recognize when it is in a wireless area at UC and should automatically connect. If you are in a wireless areas and can t connect, turn AirPort off and then on again (through the AirPort Status Icon). This will usually fix the problem.

23 Configuring WPA2 for Linux Before beginning, please note that this was tested on a laptop with Ubuntu 7.04 with Atheros chipset. Please make sure your flavor of Linux and wireless chipset will run WPA2 (sometimes called WPA enterprise). After any necessary changes are made to your machine, click the Network Manager icon in the upper right hand corner of the window (by default) and the following drop down menu appears (figure 32). Select Securewireless and the Wireless Network Key Required window will appear (figure 33) Fig. 32 In the dropdown boxes listed, please select the following. Where it states <username> <password> enter username (6+2) and password (this is the same as your Central Login username and password). Once done, click the Login to Network button and you will be connected.
