Rationale The proposal of a Sport Management Program of Study includes an Introduction to Sport Management course and the creation of PHED 2200 Introduction to Sport Management would meet a requirement of Area F in the Sport Management Program of Study. The administrative implementation of the program is an easy transition wherein no additional faculty is needed to teach the course. This course will offer a comprehensive introduction to the sport management industry. From the basic knowledge and skill sets of a sport manager to the current trends and issues of the sport management industry, this course will provide a foundation for students as they study and prepare for a variety of sport management careers. This course will teach students how to apply their new knowledge and skills to any segment in the sport industry from high school to the international arena. Students will gain a solid understanding of sport management structures and learn to apply principles such as sport ethics to the many segments and support systems of the industry. B. Common Course Outline GEORGIA PERIMETER COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION COMMON COURSE OUTLINE PHED 2200 INTRODUCTION TO SPORT MANAGEMENT COURSE ABBREVIATION PHED 2200 CREDIT HOURS 3 COURSE TITLE INTRODUCTION TO SPORT MANAGEMENT CATALOG DESCRIPTION Introduces students to the meaning of sports management in terms of its scope, foundations, issues, and future trends. Examines the job responsibilities and competencies required of sport managers in a variety of sports, or sport-related organizations. Also provides the student with an overview of the different facets and career opportunities available in the field of sport management. Required Text Textbook is available for this course EXPECTED EDUCATIONAL RESULTS PHED 2200 provides the individual student with an overview of the structure of the sports industry and highlights the scope and variety of career opportunities in that area. Upon completion of the course, the student will: 1. Recognize the broad scope of industry settings and career opportunities with the Sport Management field; 2. Demonstrate an understanding of the foundations of the field including the historical and business perspectives; 3. Examine and evaluate amateur and professional sport opportunities and develop an understanding of the expectations of sport managers in these areas; and 4. Develop written, oral, and communication skills. GENERAL EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES I. Students develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in the following ways: i. Develop speaking skills through peer group activities, class discussions, and oral presentations;

6 Page 6 of 7 ii. Develop listening skills through note taking in class, responding to oral and technical presentations, and from peer group activities in class; iii. Develop reading skills through comprehension of textbook materials and the evaluation of secondary sources; and iv. Develop their writing skills by planning and revising short reports and essays. II. Students demonstrate effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills in the following ways: i. Analysis of case studies and demonstration of the proper strategies for litigation avoidance; ii. Learn basic sports legal terminology; and iii. Create a valid sports management contract. COURSE CONTENT 1. What is Sport Management? 2. History of Sport Management 3. Sports Communications Broadcasting 9. Recreation and Facility Management 10. Event Management 11. Sport Agencies 12. Sporting Goods Industry and Licensed Apparel 13. Health Fitness Industry 14. Income Disparity in Sport 15. Sports Information/Public Relations 16. International Sport 17. Sport Tourism ASSESSMENT OF EXPECTED EDUCATIONAL RESULTS A. COURSE GRADE Tests and a final exam prepared by individual instructors will be used to determine part of the course grade. Instructors may also require special projects appropriate to the subject matter. B. DEPARTMENTAL ASSESSMENT The departmental assessment will be conducted every three years in the following manner: 1. All students in all sections will be required to complete a common written final exam containing questions related to the expected educational results.

7 Page 7 of 7 2. Additionally, all students will be required to complete one short-answer essay question. 3. An item analysis will be completed on the test items administered and a representative sample of the short-answer essay questions will be reviewed by a committee of at least three full-time faculty members who teach the course. USE OF ASSESSMENT FINDINGS A departmental committee will review the item analysis to determine: 1. If the test questions were appropriate for assessing the desired educational outcomes. 2. If the level of student success was achieved. 3. If a revision of course instruction to improve student s achievement is needed. 4. A specific time line for implementation of recommended changes.
