1 GRADE 5 ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY LESSON 4 ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY Lesson 4 GRADE 5 LEARNER OUTCOME W-5.3: Identify the basic components of the human reproductive system, and describe the basic functions of the various components; e.g., fertilization, conception. MATERIALS:. HANDOUT: The Journey of a Sperm 2. HANDOUT: Sperm Production Story 3. SLIDE: Sperm Production 4. ANSWER KEY: Male Reproductive System INTRODUCTION: This lesson encourages students to examine sperm production in greater detail. APPROACHES/STRATEGIES: A. GROUND RULES (5 min) Ensure ground rules are established before beginning this lesson. For classes that have already established ground rules, quickly reviewing them can promote a successful lesson. B. SPERM PRODUCTION Students examine sperm production. Choose one of the following options: OPTION ONE: Cloze Story. Distribute the Journey of a Sperm handout. 2. Encourage students to complete the activity by filling in the blanks with the appropriate terms. This can be accomplished individually or using a small group technique such as think-pair-square.

Distribute the Sperm Production Story handout. 2. Encourage students to read the story and determine which branch is true each time there is a story branch. This can be accomplished individually or using a small group technique such as think-pairsquare. You may want to make the answer key into a slide and use it as a visual aid during the discussion. 3. Correct the handout using the Sperm Production slide and the Male Anatomy answer key. C. CLASS DISCUSSION (0-5 min) Students review their knowledge of the process of sperm production and the menstrual cycle.. What do you think is most interesting about sperm production? Encourage students to provide appropriate comments. 2. What does a male need to be able to produce before he is able to produce a baby? A male needs to be producing sperm in order to be able to produce a baby. 3. Who can you ask if you still have questions about sexuality? They were held in a special sac called the 2.. This sac could hold the testicles close to the body to keep them warm, or let them hang away from the body to keep them cool. The testicles made special reproductive cells called 3.. Once these cells were made, they would wait to be released from the testicles. Sometimes, they would wait so long that they dissolved. Other times, they would be released from the testicles, make a journey through the male reproductive system, and leave the male s body. When the sperm leave the penis, it is called ejaculation. On the day in question, it just so happened that the sperm got to be released from the body. First, the 4. became larger, longer and firmer until it stuck out from the body. (When the penis gets this way it is called an 5.. Erections are a normal process of growing up, and can happen for physical reasons or because of sexual arousal.) Then the sperm travelled up the 6.. Along the way, it mixed with prostatic fluid from the prostate gland and seminal fluid, which was made in the 7.. Once these fluids mixed, they decided to call themselves 8..
