3 Organizational Leadership and Communication Certificate Program In today s demanding workplace, managers are constantly challenged to find new and innovative ways to involve and motivate employees and affect positive change that improves the company s bottom line. The Organizational Leadership and Communication Certificate Program focuses on the practical skills professionals need to develop and maintain in order to lead others and be an agent of change. 4 Complete Certificate Program Online Curriculum Foundations of Leadership MGMT X (2 units) Leadership is the process of influencing others in order to achieve organizational goals and bottom line results. Leaders today face many challenges including globalization, coping with rapid change, increased complexity, technological advancements and virtual teams. Yet leaders still need to effectively manage employees, inspire others, and shape organizational culture. This course focuses on the components of successful leadership, which includes both theoretical approaches and practical skills. Students will examine styles of leadership, approaches to leadership, and sources of power. Participants will also determine how to create vision, achieve organizational goals, manage conflict, and promote diversity. Interpersonal Communication MGMT X (2 units) In our complex and competitive business world today it is more important than ever to recognize the central role of communication in our lives. Interpersonal communication skills are essential in today s business environment. Communicating clearly and intentionally is crucial to produce organizational results and meet organizational goals. At work we communicate with colleagues, customers, management, peers, teams, and executives. This course explores in depth interpersonal everyday communication in the workplace by focusing on verbal and nonverbal communication, active listening, team building, defusing conflict, and leadership. Students will discover the importance of people skills for communicating one on one, in small groups, and with an audience. Participants will develop communication competence, which is essential for building relationships and achieving success in the workplace. Leading Small Groups MGMT X (2 units) Develop better communication skills in a small group context by exploring the communication processes that are central to effectively leading meetings and working in teams. Most organizations today rely heavily on work teams for projects, problem solving, and decision-making. A diverse mix of people are working on teams of all types, including project teams, self-directed work teams, and virtual teams. This course covers developing leadership in teams, team vision and goals, meeting facilitation skills, active listening skills, increasing creativity, working collaboratively, building trust, relationships, and cohesiveness. It also focuses on managing roles, group norms, conflict, and groupthink. Conflict Resolution MGMT X (2 units) Conflict is inevitable in organizations. Conflict may occur between individuals, teams, departments, or organizations. While conflict is typically viewed as negative, it can actually be positive and lead to better decision-making and solutions in organizations when using appropriate communication practices. What makes conflict negative or positive is the way in which it is handled and the resulting outcome. In this course students will develop practical skills to manage conflict, strengthen relationships, and build trust in organizations. Participants will examine causes of conflict, pros and cons of different styles of conflict, and methods of conflict resolution. This course also focuses on managing perceptions and emotions during conflict and working collaboratively toward a win/win resolution. Interpersonal skills are essential not only to managers in a business environment, but to everyday life. Yet, it is a discipline which is rarely taught. Engaging with the various instructors and learning from their experiences really brought the subject matter to life. The Organizational Leadership and Communication program improved my understanding of team dynamics and has helped me communicate and manage work relationships more effectively. Marina Sun, Program Graduate For class schedule: extension.uci.edu/olc
5 Communicating Across Cultures ANTHRO X (2 units) This course focuses on communicating across diverse cultures in today s complex global business world. Culture affects and is affected by the communication practices we use. As the world of work becomes more globally interconnected and culturally diverse we need to successfully communicate across cultures and effectively handle diversity. Different cultures have different meanings for verbal and nonverbal communication and negative consequences can result when those cues are misinterpreted. This course increases sensitivity to other cultures and increases awareness of our own cultural backgrounds. Students will develop the skills to deal with the challenges of intercultural communication in a variety of work contexts and apply the principles of effective intercultural communication through theoretical, ethnographical, and practical tools from the interpersonal to global level. Managing Organizational Change MGMT X (2 units) Leaders face many challenges when faced with planning, introducing, and implementing organizational change whether it is a simpler change (introducing new technology, change in work processes) or more complex (new leadership, new organizational structure, merger). Employees typically resist change due to the uncertainty and fear that surrounds the potential impact on their jobs and roles in the organization. How, when, and who the change is communicated to has a major impact on whether employees will resist or support the change and whether the change succeeds or fails. This course will focus on best communication practices during both planned and unplanned organizational change, change strategies, and successfully leading an organization through change. On-Site Training Bring this program to your workplace. Through Corporate Training, we can deliver this program or customize one that fits your company s specific needs. Visit extension.uci.edu/corporate or call (949) for information. Virtual or Remote Management and Communication MGMT X (2 units) In today s complex global business environment, virtual teams are replacing committees and coworkers are no longer across the hall, they are on the other side of the country or the world. Social networks are becoming a source of power and impact organizational effectiveness. Companies are turning more to virtual teams and management as the world becomes more virtually connected. This course focuses on communication processes in virtual organizations and how to build, manage, and lead virtual teams. With members in various dispersed geographical locations several communication issues relating to virtual management in these organizations are emerging: team building, defusing conflict, emerging networks, building trust, and developing organizational identification among multi-cultural workforces. Learn the impact of distance and diversity on processes and outcomes as well as examine culturally diverse practices in a global environment. Concise Writing MGMT X (2 units) Strong writing skills are necessary for effective communication in today s complex business world, especially with the advent of new technologies. This course will take an audience centered approach for preparing and writing messages considering the objective of the message and the organizational context for maximum impact. Business writing style needs to be adjusted to the recipient and the type of correspondence, which includes memos, proposals, reports, letters, and s. Students will utilize principles for effective, clear, concise writing especially if the message is complex or difficult to understand. Content, style, mechanics, structure, word usage, and organization will all be considered. Students will also focus on choosing the most appropriate writing medium based on the message, the objective, and the audience. Approaches to writing could include informative, persuasive, or sales as well as appropriate communication practices for delivering good news and bad news in a written format.
