1 Subject-specific study and examination regulations for the master s degree program in biomedical sciences Valid as of February 17, 2015 On December 13, 2014 the following statutes were enacted by the Senate of Reutlingen University based on 32, section 3, sentence 1 in connection with 19, section 1, sentence 2, No. 9 of the university law in the state of Baden-Württemberg (Landeshochschulgesetz LHG) dated January 1, 2005, last amended by article 1 of the third law concerning amendments to university law dated April 1, 2014 as well as 1, section 2 of the general study and examination regulations for the bachelor s and master s degree programs of Reutlingen University (StuPrO), dated March 4, The President of Reutlingen University approved of the statutes according to 32, section 3, sentence 1 LHG on February 17, Goal (1) The goal of the 3-semester course of studies is to offer students scientific and applicationoriented instruction in the field of biomedical sciences. (2) After successful completion of the course of studies, students will be able to start a responsible and qualified position in business, in scientific research or in the public service sector. Based on the extensive research done in the course of studies, it should be possible for students to continue their studies with the goal of achieving further qualification, e.g. a doctor s degree. (3) After successful completion of the studies, students will have achieved a basic qualification as well as the ability to do research and applied science. The goal is acquisition of profound knowledge, skills and competence regarding the interaction of materials and biological systems, the utilization of materials for biomedical applications and the analysis of biological system and materials. Instruction in topics that are relevant for industry such as the licensing and management of innovation and technology serves to prepare students for future professions in the fields of medical technology, pharmacy, bioanalytics. diagnostics and other fields of life science. (4) The course of studies serves to impart competences for independent scientific work as well as the comprehensive understanding of relevant research and development processes. Students will be prepared to conduct ambitious projects in science and industry. (5) A further goal of the course of studies is to promote the communicative competence of students in an international environment. For this reason, all lessons will be conducted in English. Foreign students will thus be more able to participate in the degree program.

2 2 Diploma / duration of studies The master s degree program in biomedical sciences comprises three semesters and culminates in the Master of Science degree (M.Sc.). 3 Structure of the course of studies (1) Table 1 shows the number of weekly hours and European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) points required to successfully complete the master s degree program. Table 1: Weekly hours and ECTS credits Degree WH ECTS points Master of Science (2) In the first two semesters students will attend theoretical and practical (laboratory) courses. The third semester is devoted to work on the master s thesis. (3) The curriculum, including modules and courses, is given in the study and exam plan (see table 2). Table 2 lists the modules, courses and exams necessary to successfully complete the studies and obtain the master s degree. (4) An elective course (BMS9) is required and may be chosen from the course offerings of another faculty, in which case approval by the exam board is necessary. 4 Prerequisites (1) In the event that a student s first academic degree contains fewer than 210 ECTS points, he or she must make up these points by absolving a practical semester (internship) or additional modules / course work. This additional work is subject to the approval of the examination board and must be done before the student begins work on the master s thesis. Internships shall be supervised by the Faculty of Applied Chemistry, which awards 30 ECTS points for the successful completion thereof. These provisions are regulated by the guidelines of the examination board. (2) For safety reasons, students must absolve a preparatory safety training and /or introductory colloquium before beginning the practical lab work for module BMS11. 3 5 Semester at a foreign university (1) Within this course of studies, students may absolve a maximum of one semester at a foreign university. (2) Students who study at a foreign university must, upon return, document that they have successfully completed 30 ECTS points in modules that have not already been absolved at Reutlingen University. (3) The modules to be absolved at a foreign university shall be determined in the Learning Agreement as shall their applicability regarding the course of studies at Reutlingen University. In the event that a student does not achieve 30 ECTS points during the semester abroad, the missing points can be obtained by doing additional work in Reutlingen, subject to the approval of the chairperson of the examination board. 6 Language All courses are conducted in English. 7 Master s thesis (1) The master s thesis shall document that the student can independently, systematically and scientifically work through a problem in a particular field of specialization within a given time period. (2) Students may begin the master s thesis module (BMS12) when they have obtained at least 45 ECTS credit points in the first two semesters. Modules BMS10 and BMS11 must have been completed before work on the master s thesis can be started.
