3 A survey alone is not the solution. If assessing company character were as simple as participating in a survey, employee surveys wouldn t have such a bad reputation. If you re like most business leaders, you: Struggle to get a true pulse on your employees attitudes and perceptions Have participated in employee surveys before with little to no return on investment (things may have actually gotten worse!) With the right approach you can gain a true read on your employees, feel crystal clear about what to do next and show people that they really matter. 5 It seems easier said than done. There s so much that gets in the way. Leaders get caught in the trap of rationalizing inaction ( You ll never please everyone, right? ). Many companies lack the infrastructure to share and act on feedback, let alone make meaningful changes. The time invested in employee surveys has rarely (if ever) lead to changes that make a difference and people are skeptical. Leaders get feedback and over simplify with quick fixes to symptoms rather than the actual problem. Many people avoid the uncomfortable conversations that come from asking for feedback. 6 Developing and protecting the integrity of your company s character doesn t have to be complicated But it does require time, energy, and action. Your investment in listening to employees will show higher returns when you: Go beyond employee engagement scores and examine what s helping and hindering human performance - the things that are actionable and meaningful. Do the work pre- and post- survey to get people ready and help them see the impact of sharing their opinions. Be prepared to ask questions about complaints remember most people don t know how to give effective feedback. Set yourself up for success - only ask about the things you re willing (and able) to change. Focus on changes that make the biggest difference for the most people. Avoid getting caught up in what s trendy and cool - perks are awesome, but they can also backfire.
